CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. â Xondre Willis zipped through the Campbellsville defense 34 yards for a second-quarter score and Jordan Olinger had a long touchdown catch, but it wasn't enough to rally the University of Pikeville past Campbellsville in a 28-14 loss on Thursday night.
At halftime, Campbellsville (1-0) had already outgained the Bears 273-89 in total offense before ending the game with a 502-328 advantage. Tiger quarterback Hunter Brown threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns â all caught by freshman Kendon Young.
UPIKE (0-1) only trailed 14-7 after the first 30 minutes, but Campbellsville scored 14 straight points to open the second half and never relinquished the lead.
Young was a problem for the Tigers all night, hauling in touchdown catches of six, 33 and 10 yards.
Willis finished with 78 yards on the ground for the Bears, gaining nearly eight yards everytime he touched the ball. Redshirt freshman receiever Arites Clark was another bright spot, using his 6-6 frame to catch six passes for a gamr-high 92 yards.
Sani Warren completed 13-of-29 passes for 181 yards and an interception, while Bowen Smith went 6 of 14 with the 24-yard scoring strike to Olinger.
Defensively, Tanner Fiser and Nathan Pray led the way with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively, with Pray also adding a pick in the first half. Justin Manning and Darius Moore tallied 10 stops each for Campbellsville.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
Campbellsville used a short field to strike first as it went 38 yards on four plays, ending with a 3-yard run by Wade Holtsclaw to take a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
About eight minutes later, UPIKE got on the board with a speedy 34-yard run by Willis that put the exclamation point on a nine play, 71-yard drive that lasted more than three minutes (7-7).
With less than two minutes to go in the first half, Campbellsville regained the lead on a 6-yard fade route to Young (14-7), then Brown struck again early in the third quarter with a 33-yard touchdown pass to widen the margin to 21-7 with 10 minutes on the clock.
Young wasn't done there as he added his second scoring catch of the third quarter from 10-yards out with 5:11 on the clock (28-7).
It took more than 20 minutes, but UPIKE was able to put points on the board again when Smith hooked up with Jordan Olinger from 24 yards out for six. William Chandler connected on the extra point to make it 28-14 with three minutes left in the third quarter.
