Carson-Newman 48. UPIKE 7
#1
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's rushing attack was as good as advertised as it ran for 306 yards and six touchdowns on the way to a 48-7 win over the University of Pikeville on Thursday night at Burke-Tarr Stadium.

The Eagles (1-0) outgained the Bears 452-231 overall, with Antonio Wimbush racking up 118 yards and three scores on 15 first-half carries. Marcus Williams also had multiple touchdowns for C-N with two on six carries for 37 yards.

C-N quarterback Derrick Evans was a dual-threat, rushing for 38 yards while also throwing for 126 yards on 4-of-6 passing.

UPIKE (0-2) picked up 184 of its yards in the second half when it outgained the Eagles 184-98. Backup quarterback Bowen Smith had a lot to do with that as he threw for 81 yards on 7-of-9 passing with a touchdown in his first action of the game.

Starter Sani Warren went 8 of 21 for 61 yards against the first teamers as Arites Clark was once again the top target of the quarterbacks, catching five passes for 63 yards, including the lone UPIKE touchdown.

Xondre Willis led the Bear rushing attack for the second straight week, gaining 48 yards on 10 carries with a long of 13.

Penalties were a major part of the first-half story as UPIKE was called for six in the first two periods alone before ending up with 11 for the game, resulting in a loss of 95 yards. C-N posted a 27-12 advantage in first downs and controlled the clock, keeping the ball more than five minutes longer than the Bears.

HOW IT WENT DOWN

Carson-Newman scored its first touchdown on its second drive of the game as Wimbush needed just one play to go 47 yards and make it a 6-0 lead after the extra point was blocked by Romon Morris with just less than three minutes off the clock.

Four minutes later, it was Williams capping off a nine-play, 60-yard drive with a rushing touchdown of 11 yards to make it 13-0 with 8:18 left in the quarter.

Carson-Newman's final score of the quarter came at the 2:02 mark on a seven-yard rush by Wimbush (20-0).

Less than a minute had gone off the clock in the second quarter when Dillingham got in on the scoring act with a three-yard run to push the lead to 27-0.

Nearly eight minutes went by before Wimbush added his third rushing touchdown, ending an 11-play, 86-yard drive that lasted nearly five minutes with a short 3-yard score. For the Eagles, it was their sixth straight drive ending with a touchdown (34-0).

Just before halftime, Williams ran 10 yards for his second touchdown of the game, helping Carson-Newman take a 41-0 lead into the locker room at the break.

Thirteen minutes into the third quarter was when the first passing touchdown was scored as backup quarterback Tyler Thackerson lofted a 12-yard pass into the back corner of the end zone to Quinton Phillips for six (48-0).

UPIKE's first scoring drive was a solid one as Smith entered and completed 7 of 9 passes for 81 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass to Clark to make it 48-7 with five minutes to play.
