(1) Alabama 41 Colorado State 23
#1
A good ram will fight like that. The Colorado State Rams were big underdogs coming into Bryant-Denny Stadium to play No. 1 ranked Alabama, but the visitors were playing to win until the very end, and gave the Crimson Tide problems. In the very end, however, Bama was a 41-23 winner, though some problems remain.

Alabama had good offensive statistics, but had defensive deficiencies, including giving up a rare 100-plus yards rushing to the Rams.

The Tide had 23 first downs, but allowed CSU 22.

In rushing, Alabama had 39 carries for 239 yards with Jalen Hurtrs leading Bama with 11 carries for 103. Bo Scarbrought had 12 runs for 66 yards and Damien Harris 11 for 53. All had a rushing touchdown. Colorado State had 40 rushes for 144 yards.

Alabama completed 13 of 21 passes for 248 yards with Hurts good on 12-17 for all 248 and two touchdowns. Nick Stevens for Colorado State threw it 38 times with 21 completions (but two interceptions) for 247 yards and two TDs.

Calvin Ridley led the Tide receivers with 3 catches for 92 yards and a TD, while Robert Foster had only one catch, but for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Alabama had total offense of 60 plays for 487 yards, 8.1 yards per play. The Rams had 78 plays for 391 yards, 5 yards per play.

There were no fumbles in the game.

Alabama’s JK Scott punted only twice for a 50-yard average. Ryan Stonehouse punted three times for Colorado State for a 50.3 average.

Keith Holcombe led the Bama defensive effort with 9 tackles (4 primary), while DaRon Payne, Shaun Dion Hamilton, and Minkah Fitzpatrick were in on six each. Levi Wallace broke up four passes. Interceptions were turned in by Ronnie Harrison and Hottie Jones.

It was a game with no sacks.

No one would say that Alabama was consistent in the first half, but the Crimson Tide ceertainly had some spectacular plays.

Bama scored on its first three possessions – Jalen Hurts keeping up the middle on a 27-yard run to cap a 6-play, 75-yard drive in 2:17 to start the game; Hurts connecting with Calvin Ridley on a short slant pass that Ridley turned into a 78-yard touchdown as Bama went from its own 5 to the score in 4 plays and 1:28; and Andy Pappanastos closed out the third possession with a 46-yard field goal and a 17-0 lead.

The Tide had opened the game with two tailbacks -- Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris – in the game, and Scarbrough went for 14 yards on the game’s first play, Harris for 17 on the second.

Meanwhile, Colorado State’s first three drives had amassed a total of only 14 yards and the only first down for the Rams came on a pass interference call.

But things slowed down for Alabama. After JK Scott’s 52-yard field goal attempt was just off the mark to the right, Colorado State made some noise.

Behind quarterback Nick Stevens throwing and running and a nice inside running game the Rams got on the board with a 27-yard field goal from Wyatt Bryan. CSU drove 12 plays and kept the ball for 4:38 to get on the scoreboard.

Colorado State made it a little closer with an 85-yard, 11-play drive for a touchdown with just 2:18 until halftime. The Rams got a nice fade pass to 6-5 Warren Jackson for the touchdown from the Alabama 4.

To its credit, Alabama didn’t let the CSU rally faze the Tide.

Following the kickoff and Henry Ruggs III return to the Alabama 24, Bama took just 5 plays to score with a minute remaining in the second quarter. Hurts hit Scarbrough for 11, and then Hurts ran for 11. After an overthrown pass and a short run by Scarbrough, Hurts connected with Robert Foster along the left sideline at the CSU 44. Foster showed his speed as he raced to the middle of the field, and then headed down the middle untouched to the end zone, a 52-yard touchdown. Pappanastos kicked his third extra point and Alabama had a 24-10 lead – and if that score sounds familiar, it was the final across the state where Auburn defeated Mercer.

Alabama got the second half started when Levi Randolph tipped a Rams’ pass into the hands of Tide safety Ronnie Harrison for an interception at the Alabama 15. It looked like nothing would come of the opportunity when a third down pass was tipped incomplete, but CSU was guilty of a substitution infraction giving the Tide a first down. Bama didn’t squander the second chance. The Tide got three passing first downs from Hurts and a 13-yard run from Scarbrough for another, and on first-and-goal from the nine Scarbrough burst up the middle to complete the 14-play, 88-yard drive and give Alabama a 31-10 lead.

Another more dramatic interception, this one by Hootie Jones, set up another third quarter Tide touchdown. Jones returned the pick 65 yards to the 11. Josh Jacobs got his first action of the season, rushing for seven yards to the 4 and then Damien Harris took it in for the TD and a 38-10 lead.

For those who wondered if or when it would happen, Tua Tagovailoa took over at quarterback late in the third quarter and Alabama completed that series with an early fourth quarter 43-yard field goal by Pappanastos. It was 41-10 with essentially a quarter to play, and that fourth quarter belonged to Colorado State playing against primarily Alabama backup players.

A hands to the face penalty kept a 75-yard Rams drive alive as Stevens took it in for a touchdown on a fourth-and-goal from the Bama 6 to make it 41-17.

After Alabama failed to move, the Rams were able to complete an 82-yard drive, helped along by a hands-to-the-face personal foul penalty. Stevens hit Jackson again on a fade route. CSU went for a two-point conversion that was stopped, leaving it at 41-23.
