Kentucky State 30 Kentucky Wesleyan 23
#1
FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College football team scored the final 10 points against Kentucky State on Saturday, but a late surge was not enough as the Panthers fell 30-23. Kentucky Wesleyan moves to 1-2 on the season while the Thorobreds improve to 1-2.

Kentucky State wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on their first drive of the game. That touchdown was the lone score of the first 15 minutes as the Thorobreds took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Panthers responded in the second quarter with seven points of their own. Mike McGee connected with Travell Brown for a 20-yard gain to break into Thorobred territory. Three plays later McGee found Trey Waltermire in the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown pass. Reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week Chris Logsdon converted the extra point to put the Panthers on the board.

Kentucky State returned the ensuing kickoff 90-yards to take a 21-14 lead, a score that would stick until halftime.

During the third quarter, McGee connected with Waltermire again, this time for a 19-yard touchdown reception. The extra point attempt was no good, leaving the Panthers in a 14 point deficit with just over 25 minutes remaining in the contest.

Kentucky Wesleyan trailed 30-13 entering the fourth quarter and were able to put 10 more points on the scoreboard but the comeback fell just short.

With just under 12 minutes remaining, Jared Beard caught a 9-yard pass from McGee and Logsdon converted the extra point to put the Panthers within 10 points.

Five minutes later Kentucky Wesleyan earned possession back within their own end zone. A 26-yard pass to Ladarrius Dunn put the Panthers into Thorobred territory but they had to settle for a field goal for the final score of the game.

McGee finished the game with 30 completions good for 312-yards with three touchdowns. Dunn led all receivers with 75-yards off of nine receptions. Waltermire finished with 67-yards for two touchdowns while Beard was right behind with 66-yards and one touchdowns. Corey Johnson led the Panthers with 37-yards rushing.

Peyton Marksbury led the defense with eight tackles including five solo. Marksbury also tabbed two tackles for loss. Ty Martin-Miles, Michael Malone and Martavius Carter recorded six tackles a piece. Dalan Cofer tabbed the lone sack for the Panthers for a loss of six-yards.

Kentucky Wesleyan will return to action on Sept. 30 when they open Great Midwest Athletic Conference play at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. Kick off is set for 2 pm CT.
