The Cumberlands 51 Edward Waters (FL) 7
#1
Jacksonville, FL – The UC Patriots used five turnovers, including two interceptions returned for touchdowns, on their way to a huge 51-7 blowout victory over Edward Waters College on Saturday. The Patriots held the Tigers to just 92 yards of total offense on 61 plays in route to the win, which moves UC to 3-1 overall on the season.

The Patriots would open the game with the ball, but would be held to a three-and-out as they punted away to give EWC possession on their own 27 yard line. After picking up two first downs to get to the UC 48 yard line, Basil Spencer would fumble the ball as Jay Woods would recover it at the EWC 47 yard line, giving UC great field position. After a 13 yard run by Seph Burke and a 33 yard run by Kevin Claussen, it was Austin Hatfield finding the end zone from two yards out for the touchdown to give UC the early lead. The PAT by Joe Rose was good, making it 7-0 UC.

EWC's offense would be held to three-and-out on their next drive as UC would take over on their own 27 yard line. The Patriots would pick up three first downs on the drive and get down to the EWC 34 yard line, but the offense would stall as a pass on fourth and 12 would go incomplete for a turnover on downs. The Tigers would once again get the ball in decent field position, but would have to punt away as the Patriot defense would come through with their bend-not-break mentality.

UC's next drive would begin in the first quarter and carry over to the second as they would put together a 14 play, 59 yard drive that ate 4:42 off the clock that was capped off by a 33 yard field goal by Rose, giving UC a 10-0 lead. This was just the start of the scoring though for the Patriots.

Edward Waters would continuously go backwards on their next drive, beginning at their own 35 yard line. After a three yard carry, a 15 yard penalty would plague the offense as the punt team would come onto the field. Christioni Robinson would mishandle the snap as Hunter Miniard would force a huge fumble, which gave UC possession on the EWC six yard line. The Patriot offense would struggle to find the end zone on the drive, but Rose would smash another field goal through the pipes, this one from 39 yards out, to give UC a 13-0 lead. The Tigers would get a first down on their next drive, but would stall out with a turnover on downs. UC would take over at the EWC 46 yard line, but a pass from Josiah Robbins to Joronnie Hinton was intercepted by Kennard Mahone as they would take over on their own 32 yard line.

With 4:52 to play in the quarter, EWC would go three-and-out on their drive as UC would get the ball on their 29 yard line. After a ten yard penalty moved the Patriots back to their 19 yard line, Robbins' pass to Nate Cohen deep down the side was picked off by Marcus Bass, Jr., giving the Tigers possession at midfield. After working their way down to the UC 19 yard line, Christian Hayes' pass intended for Jamal Hughes was intercepted and returned 85 yards by Jeremiah Baker for a Patriot touchdown. Rose's PAT was good, pushing the lead to 20-0. On EWC's first play of the ensuing drive, Hayes' pass to Basil Spencer was picked off by Jamaria Patterson and returned to the EWC 10. There, it took three plays before Robbins would find Shon Jones on an 11 yard pass to the end zone for another UC touchdown. The point after was good, pushing the Patriots ahead 27-0 at the half.

EWC opened up the 2nd half with possession, but another three-and-out gave UC the ball on their own 38 yard line. On second and four, Robbins would throw an interception on a pass intended for Jones as the Tigers would take over on the UC 30 yard line. The Patriot defense would step up their play as they would once again hold Edward Waters for another turnover on downs, getting the ball back to their offense on the UC 45 yard line. After picking up two first downs, Robbins would find Hunter Miniard down the sideline on a 31 yard pass for another Patriot score. Rose's PAT was good, giving UC a 34-0 lead. EWC would pick up a third down conversion on the next possession, but on first and ten, the pass from Hayes to Spencer was picked off by Jay Woods and returned 42 yards for a touchdown. The point after was good, extending the lead to 41-0 Patriots with 3:44 to play in the third.

The Tigers would then be bitten by the turnover bug again on the first play of their next drive as a fumbled snap would be recovered by UC's Tyler Pendleton, giving the Patriots the ball back on the EWC 22 yard line. After making it first and goal from the Tigers 10 yard line, the offense would stall as Rose would be called upon again as this time, he would drill a 24 yard field goal through the uprights, making it 44-0 with 1:49 on the clock. EWC would punt it away on the next drive as UC would take possession on their own 47 yard line to start the fourth quarter.

There, Coby Jones would use two big runs, one for 33 yards and another for 13 yards, to put UC inside the red zone. Octavius Whitfield would then take over as he would punch it in from seven yards out for another Patriot score. The point after was good by Rose, making it 51-0 Pats. The teams would trade possessions back and forth until the Tigers finally found their way onto the scoreboard as Joey Williams would force a fumble, knocking the ball away from the Patriots, as Shaquille Stoudemire would scoop and score from 35 yards out. The PAT was good, but that's all the scoring the Tigers would muster together as UC would walk away with a convincing 51-7 win.

The Patriots would combine for 203 yards rushing on the night as Jones would have 44 yards on three carries, leading the way in yardage. Eleven different Patriots would carry the ball tonight for UC. Through the air, it was Josiah Robbins going 7-19 for 61 yards with two TDs and three interceptions. Cody Jones also went 2-8 passing for 25 yards with an interception. Shon Jones (17 receiving yards) and Hunter Miniard (31 receiving yards) found pay dirt on receptions in the game. Joe Rose was perfect on the night, going 3-3 on field goals and 6-6 on point after tries.

Defensively, the Patriots collectively had three sacks, seven tackles for loss, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, four interceptions, and five pass breakups. Jeremiah McKibben led the way with six tackles (two solo) including two tackles for loss along with Chanco Estes with six tackles (one solo) with a sack and a tackle for loss.
