UPIKE 41 St Andrews 6

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- With both the offense and defense clicking for the University of Pikeville football team, the result was a lopsided 41-6 win at St. Andrews in the Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division opener on Saturday at Knight Field.

UPIKE moves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while St. Andrews drops to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the MSC Appalachian. For the Bears, this makes three straight wins after starting the year 0-2.

It was only 14-0 at halftime before the Bears outscored the Knights 27-6 in the second half.

Sani Warren completed 17-of-31 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score as well as the UPIKE offense outgained St. Andrews 473-177 overall. That included a 229-14 advantage through the air and 26-9 gap in first downs.

Willie McCloud led all players with 110 rushing yards with more than half of them coming on a 66-yard touchdown run to open the second half. Xondre Willis added 93 yards on 14 carries, Tony White III had 43 yards and a touchdown on two keepers and Tellis Kennedy II punched in the final score on a 3-yd run.

Jordan Owens paced the Bears' receivers with 67 yards on seven catches, but the touchdowns were caught by Braxton Whitmore and Bradyn Randall. Whitmore finished with 63 yards on five catches and Randall racked up 24 yards on two grabs.

UPIKE's defense collected four takeaways, with two being turned into touchdowns. After a Knight fumble on their opening drive, Warren ended up finding Whitmore in the middle of the end zone to go up 7-0. After another fumble in the fourth quarter, Kennedy II finished an eight-play, 40-yard drive to make it 41-6.

The Bears' defense was dominant from the first snap and true freshman Montayo Hood led the way with a team-best 10 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. Taeron Brown chipped in with seven stops and LaBon Fisher and Tanner Fiser added six tackles each.

Romon Morris snagged his fourth interception of the season just before halftime, giving him 11 for his career which ties the program record held by Antwan Marsh. Morris also broke up a pass and Fiser, Josh Garry and Eric Bruner all recovered a fumble.

St. Andrews' Trevor McNeil gained 52 yards on 10 carries and scored its lone touchdown on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter to make the score 28-6. UPIKE answered with 13 straight points the rest of the way on White III's keeper and Kennedy II's short burst.

Keyshawn Brown had a rough outing at quarterback for St. Andrews as he was 1-of-4 passing for a single yard and gained just 16 yards on 13 carries.
