(12) UPIKE 97 (25) Life (GA) 78
#1
PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Jordan Perry matched a career high with 25 points and the 12th-ranked University of Pikeville men's basketball team buried 12 3-pointers in a 97-78 win over No. 25 Life (Ga.) on Saturday in the East Ky. Expo Center.

Life (16-7, 4-3 MSC) was shorthanded with just seven players, but recent history - a trip to the 2017 NAIA championship game - showed that doesn't always slow it down. That was evident when the Running Eagles took a 38-32 lead late in the first half.

But after trailing by one at halftime, Da'Rell Domineck powered his way to a layup to open the second half and UPIKE (20-2, 5-2 MSC) never trailed again. Instead, it utilized an 18-6 spurt late in the action to power ahead by as many as 19 points when Perry made it 97-78 with a breakaway layup in the final seconds.

For a game with 10 lead changes and six ties, the final five minutes were far from that narrative. It started with Michael Chambers making back-to-back 3s and Perry adding another right after which turned a 6-point game into an 84-71 Bear lead in less than two minutes.

The entire second half wasn't smooth sailing though. Up 67-59 with 7:41 to go, UPIKE watched the Running Eagles go on a 6-0 run to cut it to just two in less than a minute. Chambers came to the rescue then as well, making a pair of 3s as part of a 14-4 run to get UPIKE back in front by double digits.

Chambers scored 23 points with five 3s, Darrion Leslie added 17 points and eight rebounds and Jayvian Delacruz joined them in double figures with 11. Life got 21 points from Undra Mitchem who made four 3s of his own, while Zach Landis chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds.

UPIKE dominated the backboards 42-38 and outscored Life's bench of only two reserves 37-16. Foul trouble hurt both teams, but the Running Eagles had it the worst, playing the final seven minutes with just five eligible players, and one of them had four fouls.

It never turned into a game of 5 vs. 4, but the desire not to foul made it easier for UPIKE to score at the rim, lifting it to a 54.8 percent shooting mark for the game. Life shot just 41 percent and only made six of 29 3-point attempts.
