Letcher County 45 Knott County 40 (14th region Championship)
#1
Letcher will represent the 14th region this year.

Congratulations to Letcher County girls they played a great game made Knott play at a slower pace didn’t try to run with them Knotts girls can run think if Wolfe had played them this way might have been different but that’s in the past again congratulations to Letcher wish them the best of luck in Rupp Arena

I charted the referees in the 4th quarter alone and there was 7 no calls and 6 bad calls that all went in Letchers favor. That was the difference in the game.

Coming as an unbiased opinion on a level playing ground... LCC sure got some breaks late in the 4th quarter. A lot of no calls on Knott’s end that would turn around and be a foul on the other end. Of course they had home court advantage but I do believe it was a little much.

Well it was at Letcher and the 14th assignor is from Letcher and he controls who is calling the 15th region games. Wouldn’t be the first time things have just happened to fall into place.

Nobody can stand that letcher beat knott in the regional finals. I’m sure if knott had won everybody would been fine. Don’t blame the refs, there was bad calls on both ends. I think letcher deserved this win in my opinion. There just kids so stop playing blame game and give em some credit.

But non the less, letcher is going to the state tournament. Let’s support the 14th region like we would if anyone else has won.

You can’t be serious? Forced Knott into 50 turnovers with the press and running. This is only reason it was as close as it was.

That’s kinda how Wolfe felt when they played Knott but it’s going to happen you have to play through it Knott was like Wolfe they let it take them out of the game I only watched the 2nd half on my phone only seen a cpl travels that weren’t called from what I seen Knott didn’t get the pace they wanted Letcher slowed them down where they controlled the game also no need in crying over spilled milk just support Letcher in the sweet 16 and hope they cut the nets if not someone else will get to try next year Knott is a young team they will get more chances they won the all A region so they accomplished more than most this year there was several teams that was deserving of winning region but didn’t yes the refs play a role in who wins might as well get use to it learn to play through it and you can win

I was a neutral observer and guys no matter how you shake it, Letcher got some big calls late in that one. Obvious push offs and very physical and I don’t recall a single whistle being blown against them. Like I said I could have cared less who won but that was what it looked like from my perspective. Having home court advantage is enough but you throw into account everything else, drive time etc.

The 14th region really needs to look into and seriously consider some neutral sites for the 14th region tournaments.

I’m also a neutral spectator. Didn’t care who won. Just decided to chart the refs and in the fourth quarter there was 8 obvious fouls not called on Letcher. I also charged the two boys games today.

Both of you guys are belittling the accomplished of LCC. If Knott and LCC played 10 times, it would be 5 and 5. LCC played at Pikeville, Shelby Valley, Pike Central, and Belfry. They understood that you must play through physical contact. If you watched all the games, it was called the same way. Please with the neutral court...Knott, Hazard, and Perry have had it for numerous years. They rotate it among 7 sites...

I did watch all the games and in the other games these fouls were called. I even went back and watched it, it was terrible. Knott still could have won the game if they hadn’t took some bad shots but if fouls were called Letcher couldn’t have won. Letcher shot 18 free throws and Knott shot 9.

So you don’t agree we should have a neutral court location? I know of at least 3 other regional tournament sites that were actually played closer to several 14th region schools than what the actual 14th region tournament was played, if you don’t see an issue with that something is wrong. Estill had a 3 hour bus ride to and from Letcher, Owsley had a 2 hour drive to and from Letcher, Wolfe isn’t much better. If you ask me neither Letcher or Estill should be a host site as I feel it should be kept centralized to accommodate all schools not just the schools that are fortunate enough to have large facilities.

Letcher beat my lady dawgs the night before. Our game was physical and there were bad calls both ways. We failed to knock down free throws and do what we should have done to win. I was at Letcher for the championship game and will say that the officiating was the worst I have ever witnessed. Yes, Letcher won the game when time ended, but there were two standards in this game. Knott was called for fouls that should have been called. Letcher was not. There were several occasions in the fourth quarter alone that were obvious very physical and blatant Letcher fouls, but the officials swallowed their whistle. Knott county missed a layup and took a bad three pointer in the fourth, but if they had received at least a portion of the committed fouls by Letcher, then they win the game. Both of these teams play at a high level and I am supporting Letcher in the state tournament, but the officiating was horrible and Knott county definitely got hosed in this game.

I would be for a neutral site if the 14th region had a venue such as the Corbin Arena or Pikeville’s Appalachian Wireless Arena in the 15th, or Morehead State U in the 16th. But there’s nothing like those in the 14th region. It would have to be at one of the larger gyms of the schools and that wouldn’t be neutral. If it was at the same school every year, an example Breathitt or Perry, because of centralized location, that would be a big advantage to those schools every year instead of an advantage once every 7 years.

I do think the rotation should maybe be no more than 4 or 5 schools, though, but I doubt it will ever change. However, I can live with not having to travel to Letcher or Knott but once on a 7 year rotation, and in the years it’s held at Breathitt, Estill and Powell the travel time for fans and buses that are from the northern sections of the region are minimum. So it balances out.

Atmosphere was good and both teams have quality coaches whom I respect. Very, very physical game. First half, the big center for Letcher picked up two fouls and sat the remainder of the half. Knott was up 21-10 and Letcher closed that deficit by the half. Second half Knott couldn't get a call and was still up 4 with less than three minutes to go. Mullins is a very nice player and was hit hard on several calls that, in my opinion, should have been called. Knott was up by three or four points with less than 1:40 seconds and never got a call the rest of the game. Driving to the basket and drawing contact is part of the game but the girls were shoved to the floor and then fouls were called on Knott for playing defense. That put Letcher at the line where they lived and went ahead 41-40. In an erratic flurry of 20 seconds, Knott worked the ball to Mullins who was absolutely hacked and resulted in a rebound by #21 who was fouled but again no call. Ball was swung to #23 who was laid completely flat on the floor and had to delay the game to be escorted off. Again, no call. The big center finished with the same two fouls she picked up the first half I believe. She pushed off several times but again no call the entire half. Knott took bad shots and missed several layups the entire game so that's on them. Mullins missing the layup was probably anticipating getting hacked all game long. The officials absolutely were affected by the Letcher crowd and ran off the floor as fast as I have ever seen. I usually don't rant but this might be the worst game I've seen officiated in 15 years. I watched two other boys games in the 13th and the 15th during regionals but this didn't compare. I won't be surprised if video footage is sent in to be reviewed to monitor/review the referees as I have been told. It won't change the game's outcome but perhaps it will keep players from getting injured or worse, lead to fights on the floor which is what about occurred. We as fans deserve the best called game possible because the fans are what pays the schools and officials. This is becoming too common place and there has to be a line drawn in boys and girls.
