Proud Spell takes Kentucky Oaks 134
#1
Brereton Jones' homebred PROUD SPELL (Proud Citizen) hit the front approaching the eighth pole in Saturday's $500,000 Kentucky Oaks (GI) at Churchill Downs, wearing down pace-setter Bsharpsonata (Pulpit) in the stretch and going on to take the 134th edition of the annual classic for the three-year-old fillies. Sent off as the lukewarm 3/1 favorite in the ten-horse field, the Larry Jones-trained filly paid $8.80, $4.80, and $3.20 to her faithful backers while keying the $52.60 exacta, $239.20 trifecta and $1395.80 superfecta (8-7-11-1).

Bsharpsonata gunned to the front when the gates opened, running three and four wide entering the first turn but moving closer to the rail in the backstretch. With quite a few rivals close on her heels, the sophomore lass set had a perfect trip and mild fractions but couldn't last in the stretch. Proud Spell kicked into overdrive in upper stretch and passed the longtime leader, going on to win comfortably by five lengths in the end, and finishing the 1 1/8 miles on the main track in 1:50.

Little Belle rounded out the exacta, with the highly fancied Pure Clan rounding out the placings. Finishing the order were Bsharpsonata, Country Star, A To The Croft, Rasierra, Awesome Chic, and Absolutely Cindy.
