Wrestling: Region first for Raiders

Tim Ruschell was doing a couple things at once in his Grey Middle School classroom before heading over to Ryle High School for wrestling practice.

Among them, the Ryle coach was trying to find a roster of his 14 varsity wrestlers, each a candidate to advance as a state qualifier out of Saturday's second day of the regional meet at Ryle. The Sixth Region championships begin today at 6:30 p.m. and continue Saturday at 10 a.m.

"I'm doing too many things at once and talking about too many different things," Ruschell said. "I'm not too good at multi-tasking."

His wrestlers would disagree.

To them, Ruschell is the glue that holds the program together and is the reason the Raiders may be standing on the verge of their first state wrestling championship.

"He worked out with us (Thursday) morning at 6:30 and had bus duty (at Grey Middle School), and he teaches all day, and he still made time to start his day with us and now he's coming back," said junior Michael Osborne, who is ranked second in the state at 119 pounds. "He's got more passion for the sport than anybody I've ever met. He's always looking for ways to make us better, and he looks out for us and teaches us life lessons we can't get any where else."

Ruschell has guided the Raiders to six straight top-10 state finishes, and Ryle wrestlers have captured individual state championships each of the past two years. But the task at hand for Ruschell is keeping his grapplers focused on the region.

"We sent 14 to state last year. That's our goal this year," Ruschell said. "Our lineup is very solid, top to bottom. But anything can happen at a regional meet."

Ryle has won four straight regional championships. The Raiders finished second at last year's state meet, behind Louisville Trinity.

With 10 state qualifiers returning, the Raiders beat the Shamrocks in January in the finals of the talent-drenched South Oldham Dragon Invitational.

Expectations this season are justifiably high for the Raiders, but Osborne knows regional rival Campbell County, No. 4 in the state, has the same goal on Saturday - advance as many wrestlers as possible to the state meet, to be held Feb. 19-21 in Frankfort.

"Our goal is to win state, but we can't overlook the region," said Osborne, a fourth-place state finisher last year at 112 pounds. "Campbell County's chances of winning the region and state are just as good."

Other top-five wrestlers for Ryle, ranked second in the state behind Trinity, are Will Hogben, No. 2 at 171 pounds; T.J. Ruschell, No. 3 at 103 pounds; Connor Coyle, No. 4 at 160; and Court Mace, No. 5 at 152.

"Those guys at the lighter weights give us a chance to do something we've never done before," Ruschell said. "Our whole team is ready."
