The Campbell County High School boys' bowling team had the third-best record among Northern Kentucky teams in the regular season, but the Camels were second in their district, making their postseason fate far from assured.

The Camels took big steps Feb. 28, winning the Northern Kentucky regional title at Super Bowl Bellewood in Newport.

Bowling is not sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, but most Northern Kentucky schools participate.

"It's pretty exciting," said senior Ryan Widmeyer of Alexandria. "We got more pumped up today. We were ready to go."

With dozens of Camel supporters cheering every shot, the Camels beat Newport Central Catholic, Cooper, Holy Cross and Boone County to win the title. The elimination part of the tourney involved best two-of-three Baker games, in which five bowlers roll two frames apiece in a single game.

Campbell's lineup for those were Austin Richardson, Justin Tallon, Nick DeMoss, Mark Lucas, and Widmeyer. Overall, seven Camels average 170 or better.

"We've been working on our Baker games," said head coach Steve Guilkey. "We've been struggling with that all year. The kids did a good job today."

In that format, used in many college and international events, the Camels scored 182, 162 and 199 to beat Boone in the final after averaging just 166 during the season.

Campbell is one of eight boys' teams who qualified for a state-qualifying tournament March 7 at La Ru Lanes in Highland Heights. Campbell plays NCC for one of four berths in the state tournament March 14 in Louisville. The format is best three-of-five Baker games.

Other matchups are Highlands/Cooper, Boone/CovCath and Holy Cross/Lloyd. The winner of each match advances.

In the girls tourney, Highlands and Bellevue are in the qualifier after reaching the regional semifinals. Newport and Campbell County are also in the field, as are Scott, Notre Dame, St. Henry and Boone County. Five of those teams will advance to state.
