Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros ordered to appear in court

Zach Collaros helped thrust the University of Cincinnati football team into the national championship picture but it’s what he didn’t do that will land him before a judge Thursday.

Collaros, a sophomore quarterback, took over after starter Tony Pike was injured Oct. 15. The Bearcats won all four of the games Collaros started in and are ranked No. 5 in the country.

Collaros was cited for presenting a fake ID – a Tennessee driver’s license – as he tried to enter the Holy Grail, a Corryville bar, just after midnight May 15. He turned 21 in August.

Collaros was assigned a public defender and had the case continued several times, once because, his attorney wrote in court documents, he was attending UC’s football training camp.

At an Oct. 5 hearing on the charge of misrepresenting his age to obtain alcohol, Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Bernie Bouchard offered Collaros a chance to have his case go to a diversion program.

That meant Collaros was supposed to report to the diversion staff, sign a statement of guilt, pay a $200 fine, attend an eight-hour course outlining the negatives of underage drinking and the case would have been erased and sealed.

Instead, Bouchard said Wednesday, Collaros didn’t even contact officials from the diversion program.

Bouchard ordered Collaros to come to court Thursday to explain why he didn’t contact the diversion staff.

Bouchard said if Collaros wasn’t notified of his diversion program appointment or some other misunderstanding existed, he would allow that to be rectified. The charge is the highest-level misdemeanor in Ohio and carries a maximum jail sentence of 180 days.

A UC sports spokesman said head coach Brian Kelly was made aware of the issue in May, dealt with it immediately and considers the issue closed. Collaros didn’t return calls Wednesday.
