#1
The following is the statement released this morning from the family of George M. Steinbrenner III on the passing of Yankees Principal Owner/Chairperson George M. Steinbrenner III.

"It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80.

"He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family - his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren.

He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."

Mr. Steinbrenner recently celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4.

Funeral arrangements will be private. There will be an additional public service with details to be announced at a later date.

Steinbrenner, has been the owner of the Yankees since 1973. The Yankees won 11 pennants and seven World Series titles during his tenure.

I've never liked the Yankees but I have to respect this man. He was willing to spend whatever it took to win.
RIP George.

Would the Cleveland Indians have been an American League powerhouse with multiple World Series titles had MLB allowed Gearge to purchase the Indians before he ever made an offer on the Yankees????

NEW YORK -- George Steinbrenner, whose big wallet and win-at-all-cost attitude whipped the New York Yankees into a billion-dollar sports empire, died Tuesday morning. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.

Did not see this coming. Massive heart attack that caught the nation off guard. I think that George was the kind of owner that you did not want to like if you were a fan of another team, BUT if he was your team's owner, you knew that you were in perfect hands to get to the world series. I hate to hear that he died too early and I hope that the world of sports pay respect to him.
