FLORENCE - Plans are under way to build a mosque near Mall Road in Florence.

The Mercy Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization, already has approval to go forward with the Muslim worship facility. In 2002, the group attempted to build a similar facility on Mt. Zion Road in Union, but was thwarted because a request for a required zoning change was denied. Joshua Wice, business development director for the city of Florence, said the property is already zoned for the use and the site plan review has been approved. "From our end they are ready to go," Wice said.

Questions about a timetable for the mosque were referred to Mohammed Zineddin, president of the Mercy Foundation. Zineddin, a Florence physician with an office on Bankers Street, is out of the country, however, and unavailable for comment. The site is identified as a 5.58-acre parcel at 900 Cayton Road in Florence. A rendering on the Islamic Center of Northern Kentucky website shows a three-story building. The third floor consists of a circular structure topped with a dome. The site plan indicates the building will be just over 39 feet from the first floor to the top of the dome, with a square footage of 8,818 feet.

There were no cost estimates available for the project, but the parcel and an adjacent lot that is also owned by The Mercy Foundation Inc. are valued by the county at $200,000 each for tax purposes. There is also a request for donations to assist with construction of the mosque on the Islamic Center of Northern Kentucky website. We are asking you to aid us monetarily and give generously in the way of Allah to help build the first mosque in Northern Kentucky. Florence Muslim Community is in dire need of such a place. With its ever-growing community, there is great need for both old and young to congregate together and have a place to belong, a place close to Allah, a place that brings one closer to Allah."

Statistics on the Muslim population in the United States vary widely. The Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati indicates there are more than 7 million Muslims in the United States and more than 15,000 in Greater Cincinnati.

Boone County Assistant Zoning Administrator Mitch Light said there has been no such public response to this plan.
