WASHINGTON - Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was re-elected on Tuesday as the leader of the Senate Republicans for the next session of Congress.
Despite speculation that he might see some dissent from newly elected GOP tea party insurgents, McConnell was elected by acclamation to his third two-year term as minority leader, according to his office.
McConnell, 68, was nominated by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen.-elect Marco Rubio, R-Fla., one of the tea party favorites who won on Nov. 2.
"We have a great opportunity here to demonstrate that we are responding to what the American people clearly would like for us to do: cut the spending, cut the debt and get private-sector job creation going again," McConnell told reporters after his election. "It is our hope that we would be able to work with the administration on all of those issues."
"I and others have had numerous conversations with the president over the last week or so, and we look forward to exploring ways in which we can go forward together for the American people," he said.
Elected to the Senate in 1984, McConnell was elected Senate majority whip in 2002 and rose to become the Senate Republican leader in 2006.
