Arkansas State is finding themselves forging new territory every day.
The Red Wolves now 6-2 and 4-0 in conference play finds themselves by themselves a top of the Sun Belt Conference standings.
No one picked them a top of the conference in the pre-season, in fact most didnât expect them to be in the top three of the league.
Hugh Freeze has his team taking one game at a time, focusing on the task at hand, winning a conference championship.
How good is this football team?
Freeze has said from day one that the Red Wolves defense was the strength of this yearâs squad, after exploring the NCAA rankings he appears to be right.
After week eight Arkansas State is ranked No. 26th in total defense but the offense isnt far behind at No. 27.
That poses this question, how many D1 schools can boast having both their offensive and defensive units in the top 30 in the country.
The answer to that is eight schools.
AStateNation.com broke down the stat sheets and this is what we found. It appears that the Red Wolves find themselves in pretty good company.
Alabama has the No. 1 defense in the country and has the No. 23 offense.
Wisconsin is No. 11 defensively an No. 10 offensively.
Boise State is 16th defensively and No. 12 offensively.
Ohio University, no not Ohio State is No. 18 defensively and No. 24 offensively.
Utah State is No. 20 defensively and No. 26 offensively.
Stanford is No. 23 defensively and No. 9 offensively.
West Virginia No. 25 defensively and 13 offensively.
Arkansas State No. 26 defensively and 27 offensively.
The more wins the Red Wolves collect the more respect Freeze and his team is beginning to receive.
CBS Sports 120 has the Red Wolves currently ranked No. 37th in the country.
Is a Top 25 finish possible?
If Arkansas State wins Saturday against winless FAU they will win their 7th game for the first time since the Red Wolves joined the FBS.
One thing is for sure, the Red Wolves is forging new territory, where they end up is up to them as they are in position to control their own destiny.
