Senior Chris Cervantes gave up just 2 hits and struck out 10 for the Titans.

Chris Cervantes started off his senior season with a bang.
Or, more accurately, by taking the bang out of South Oldham’s bats.
Cervantes, Collins High School’s right-hander, tossed a 2-hit, 10-strikeout complete-game to lead the Titans to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Dragons in their season-opener Wednesday night.
"Chris just pitched an outstanding game," Collins Coach Roy Bailey said. "You're going to win most games when you pitch like that."
"I just felt good," Cervantes said. "My composure was good.…The first game of the season, the first game of my senior year.…I was pumped up about it.”
The Titans backed up Cervantes with eight hits – two apiece from senior Brandon Roberts and sophomore Deandre Farris – and an error-free performance in the field.
"We got timely hits, played solid defense, we didn't have any errors, that's how we're going to have to play this year with the [new] bats," Bailey said.
Collins, 18-7 in its first season, scored one run in each of the first three innings and added another in the fifth.
In the first, Roberts singled with two outs before Jalen Spalding followed with a double off the top of the center-field fence – 380-feet from home. David Decker, running for Roberts, scored on the play to give the Titans a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Cervantes, a sometimes-starter for the Titans last season, stymied South Oldham from the start. He sat down the Dragons in order in the bottom of the first, striking out two.
"I relied on my fastball,” said Cervantes, who estimated he also threw about 15 sliders. “I tried to locate it well, throw it inside, throw it outside.”
It didn’t hurt that Cervantes, who walked only three, got ahead of almost all the batters he faced, throwing 19 first-pitch strikes.
“I was just trying to get first-pitch strikes and trying to get ground ball outs," he said. "And it worked out."
Junior Logan Bailey and Farris added RBIs, and Farris finished with two stolen bases.
"This gives us confidence going into the next game and hopefully that carries over," Cervantes said. "When one person plays well, we all start playing well, it rubs off."
The Titans were scheduled to host Woodford County (the No. 24 team in the state coaches preseason Top 25) Thursday night before hosting sixth-ranked Male at 6 tonight, then traveling to Washington County at noon Saturday.
