GEORGETOWN â Wyatt Terrell was the hitting star, and Ian Hays shone on the mound as Henry Clay blasted district rival Scott County 11-2 on Tuesday night.
The Blue Devils, who edged into the No. 25 spot in the state ratings last week, won for the seventh time in their last eight games.
Terrell, a sophomore third baseman, had three hits, drove in six runs and scored twice to spark Henry Clay's comeback from an early 2-0 deficit. His six RBI were one more than he had all season.
Terrell delivered two-run singles in the third and fourth, both hits coming with two outs and two strikes.
He added a two-run double in the sixth.
"Just see-ball, hit-ball," Terrell said, summing up his night's work.
Coach Jordan Tarrence was impressed. "Wyatt's only other at-bat was a line-out (to center), so he smoked the ball all four times."
Hays was outstanding on the mound. The junior right-hander had 11 strikeouts, scattered seven hits and walked one in five innings.
Hays had a hand in 14 of 15 outs, with 11 K's, two grounders back to the box, and a pickoff play.
"We told Ian this was his best performance at Henry Clay," Tarrence said. "He threw his curveball for a strike for the first time this season.
"We've been telling him for a year that he's got as much talent as anybody. It's just between his ears. This should be a confidence booster for him."
Hays agreed.
"This was the first game I decided to trust my stuff," he said. "I've had some self-doubt, but this will help me believe in myself and get results."
After Scott County got base hits from Hunter Jones and Jordan True in taking a 2-0 lead in the first, Landon Steiner's RBI single got Henry Clay a run in the second.
The Devils went ahead to stay in the third. Clay Lawless led off with a single and was sacrificed to second.
After Walker Buehler reached on an error, Scott County left-hander Cody Grigsby got a strikeout. But Terrell didn't let him off the hook. He stroked a single to chase home Lawless and Buehler. Clay Wallace tripled to drive in Terrell, and Wallace scored on a wild pitch.
Terrell made it 7-2 in the fourth when his two-out single drove in two more runs.
He capped his big night with a two-run double in the sixth. "That one felt good. There was no pressure there," he said.
Lawless also had three hits for Henry Clay. Steiner had two RBI.
Sam Smith moved from short to pitcher and got the final six outs in relief.
Henry Clay ran its record to 10-4 after starting the season 0-2. Its only losses since then were by one run to Bryan Station and a two-run loss to Russell in Florida that Tarrence said shouldn't have happened.
"Our last 12 games, we could've won all 12 of them," Tarrence said. "So we've been playing pretty well."
