The Manica cousins -- Chase and Malik -- combined for four touchdowns as Shelby County ended its regular-season football schedule by dominating host South Oldham in the second half for a 33-21 victory Friday night.
"We just came out motivated and ready to play in the second half," Chase, a senior, said after the Rockets wiped out a 21-14 halftime deficit to win their eighth game in 10 starts, a vast improvement over their 2011 record of 2-9.
The Rockets will open the Class 5-A playoffs next Friday with a home game against North Hardin.
Malik Manica, a freshman, scored three touchdowns on runs of 39, 27 and 34 -- with two of his scores coming in the second half when the Shelby County defense held the Dragons (7-3) scoreless.
On his last TD run up the middle, Malik spun around to break free at the 20-yard line. His 34-yard run put the finishing touches on Shelby County's comeback.
"Malik is a heck of a ballplayer," Shelby County coach Todd Shipley said. "He does things ... he just does. I could say I coached him to do those things, but I would be lying. That's God-given what he does."
About his spin-around move, Malik said, "That was just a reaction. I couldn't do it without my line and the other 10 players on the field."
Malik said his first TD, a 39-yard run that helped tie the score at 14-14, came off a faked punt.
"We read the defense and there was nobody in the middle, so the ball came to me," Malik said. "Our punter (quarterback Zach Shipley) made the call."
"We have five built-in fakes and it depends on how the defense lines up," Shipley said. "We called a pass off a fake punt earlier. It didn't work and they scored after that."
Shipley only completed 5 of 19 passes for 44 yards and had two passes intercepted by South Oldham's Steve Jones. However, Shipley -- playing safety -- picked off two of the interceptions Shelby County made off South Oldham's Jack Sherry. His last pick came in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.
"I got two (picks) on defense, but I'd better do something good after throwing two interceptions," Shipley said. "Sherry probably is the best quarterback we've faced this year. He hit two or three long ones on us, but I thought we did a great job covering their receivers."
The 6-foot-5 Sherry threw a bomb on South Oldham's first play from scrimmage after Shelby County scored on its first possession for a 6-0 lead. Sherry and Dallas Banks teamed up for a 90-yard TD pass as Banks made an over-the-shoulder catch on his own 45.
Before that, Shipley completed three of four passes in an eight-play, 63-yard march that was capped by a 6-yard scoring pass from Shipley to Michael Barry. After Shelby County failed to complete a pass off a faked punt, Ticorion Williams ran 31 yards around left end for a touchdown that put South Oldham ahead 14-6.
For the game, Sherry hit on 9 of 27 passes for 216 yards, with three passes intercepted.
"The elements (a steady rain) were awful, but that's no excuse," Sherry said. "We played terrible."
South Oldham also will compete in the 5-A playoffs next week, but coach Jamie Reed was trying to find out who his team's opponent would be late Friday night.
"We didn't take advantage of the opportunities we had," Reed said. "Shelby is a great team. We knew going in they would fake some punts, but we turned the ball over four times and they manhandled us up front."

What is Shelby Co.'s chances at making a deep run into the playoffs? Happy to see them with a winning record and district championship after such hard years after the split.

Their first game is against North Hardin. After that they will play the winner of J-town/Bullitt East, two teams that they have already beaten this year. After that they would play John Hardin, which would be a very tough game for them to win. However, they do have home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
