CLASS 3A
Belfry vs. Central
Kickoff: 4 p.m. (EST) Friday
Cantrall ratings: Belfry 77.4, Central 80.3
History lesson: Central has won state titles four of the past five years, beating Belfry three times.
Belfry is a two-time champion (2003, 2004) and a six-time runner-up.
Heartbreaker: Belfry came close to beating Central last year, but the Yellowjackets pulled out a 15-14 victory when Cornelius Bolden made a spectacular catch of a 35-yard TD pass with two minutes left.
"That was a tough loss," Belfry Coach Philip Haywood said this week. "But we moved on and used it to motivate our team a little bit this year."
Belfry leaders: The Pirates' grind-it-out offense has produced 4,671 rushing yards behind running backs Justin Johnson (915 yards, 15 TDs), Trinity Carr (872 yards, eight TDs) and Austin Hatfield (735 yards, seven TDs).
QB Sani Warren has thrown for 990 yards and 11 TDs. Madison Ghormley and Tony Messer are enforcers on defense. Josh Robinson has seven interceptions.
Central leaders: Senior TaeShawn Gibbs, in his first year at QB, has thrown for 1,114 yards and nine TDs, and run for 736 yards and 13 TDs.
Deris Cox has rushed for 1,573 yards and 19 TDs.
Devonte Yelder and Derius Jones have combined for 53 catches, 1,150 yards and nine TDs.
