BUTLER (8-4)
Coach: Gary Wheeler (first season).
Starters back: Offense 2, defense 8.
Class: 6-A, District 3.
Player to watch: Senior RB/CB Joe Brown (5-9, 172) rushed for more than 600 yards and scored 12 touchdowns last season and should improve upon those numbers this year. The speedy Brown has scholarship offers from Arizona and Western Kentucky. "He's a home run threat every time he has the ball," Wheeler said.
Other top players: QB Will Johnson (Jr.), WR-CB Tavaughn Morton (Sr.), WR-LB Kermit Malone (Sr.), OL Joseph Bale (So.), OL Jared Wilder (Sr.), LB Cameron Palmer (Sr.), LB Jamil Butler (Sr.), S Conrad Carter (Sr.), S Jalen Cooper (Sr.).
Outlook: Wheeler, a 1995 Butler graduate, spent 10 of the past 11 seasons as the Bears' defensive coordinator before replacing Scott Carmony as head coach. Johnson takes over at quarterback after a solid sophomore season at running back, rushing for 530 yards and 12 TDs. "He has a great arm, and he's a scrambling threat, too," Wheeler said. The coach said the offensive line is showing promise after losing all five starters. Brown and Morton anchor the defense, both entering their fourth season as starting cornerbacks.

Class: 6-A, District 3.

Tubman, who has committed to Vanderbilt, posted 79 tackles last season, including 26 for loss. "He's like a high-grade computer who doesn't have all the programs put on yet," Boyd said. "He's learning to play football on the run."

Coach: Corey Crume (5th season, 8-36).
Starters back: Offense 8, defense 6.
Class: 6-A, District 3.
Player to watch: Senior Micah Lagowski, an offensive and defensive lineman, enters his fourth year as a starter. "He's just a hard worker," Crume said. "He's getting some attention from some smaller (colleges)."

Outlook: The Trojans have just eight victories through Crume's first four seasons as coach, but he believes this could be his best team. "We have 15 seniors this year, and all of them have a stake in the football team," Crume said. "They've all been in the weightlifting program and have playing experience. We're looking forward to this season." Southern has a deep group of running backs and receivers, and Crume said the secondary will be the strength of the defense.
