Glory Road the movie a bad dipiction of Coach Rupp or do some just take it to literal, what is your view?

I would actually have to agree. They did personify him pretty bad.

never seen it --- will never see it

i mean its a great movie with some great background on basketball at this time...BUT i think the producers took it a little to far...IMO they took Rupps words an actions and focused them into what the rest of the nation felt at that time and that was the hatred ways of the south...

I actually don't think it was portrayed as half as bad as some people think. It could've been worse....

I didnt either until i heard some people who dont have a knowledgeable background in sports say that adolph Rupp was a HUGE racist and bigot.

I think the movie done a great job of portraying Rupp. The only bad part of the movie that I disagree with was the Confederate flags being waved in the background of the game.

I think the movie depicted Rupp perfectly, a lot of people don't know that Rupp was a big time racist as was most of the south at that time. Regardless I think that it is still one of the best movies I've seen.

I kind of thought the Texas Western Coach (his name escapes me right now) Was kind of portrayed as a jerk in a way as well.

I hate the movie! I think they **** on the perception of UK BASKETBALL in general and with Coach Rupp!

I loved the movie, it is by far one of my favorite sports movies. I'll go ahead and admit that I don't know or really give a you know what about UK Basketball.

I know several players that played for Coach Rupp. Each and every one of them has told me countless times that Rupp was not a racist. He tried to sign black players. Jim McDaniels WKU, Wes Unseld Uof L and Butch Beard Uof L. Rupp didn't care if a player was Green or Purple he would have signe him. Rupp wanted to win..
Looking back at that time, it's easy to see why he couldn't sign the top black players in the state, whoever would have signed would have been the first black player to play at UK. He finally did sign a good player in Tom Payne. Very dominating center in the SEC the 2 years he played for Rupp. He went hardship and left after his Jr year.
People are going to think what they want to think. The best thing to do is talk to someone who has played for him and let them tell you about the man in the Brown Suit.

your exactly right kyrifle, Rupp tried to recruit several black players, but was very straight forward with them. He simply warned them that he could not guarantee their safety on campus, and by telling them that, these idiots brand him a racist. I admire Adolph Rupp, and his straight forward approach because of this. I will never waste my time watching that Glory Road garbage, and frequently get absolutely sick of hearing about "the game that changed college basketball forever". Rather than Texas Western's five players beating Kentucky's five players, OH NO, its black and white. Nobody on Kentucky's team deserved the unjust label placed on them (as the five white boys that were goliath). Its like Kentucky's the bad guys on everything you read about it.

he couldnt guarantee there safety while playing in the deep south in the sixties
02-20-2007, 12:01 AM
you are right, but he also told them that he couldnt guarantee their safety on the campus either because of them being the first black players on the team, which he thought would have upset the student fanbase in Lexington. You are absolutely correct though, he told them he wouldnt be able to guarantee their safety playing in the deep south...

People calm down...
1.) It's JUST a movie...
2.) We all know how Hollywood likes to warp things to make them better fitted for movies or entertainment...

And it's really nothing to get bent out of shape about. It's just a movie and it's been out for a really long time. Hollywood rarely ever depicts movies dealing with something that happened in the past accurately. When movies are made the producers or whoever change things that they think will make the movie more exciting and give it more edge and make for a better audience. In this movie it happened to be racial discrimination. I think the movie was great, I think it turned out great. As for whether it accurately portrayed Rupp I have no clue, I don't know anything about the guy pther than Rupp Arena is named after him. I think the way Hollywood played people off in the moivie was fantastic seeing how the event took place during a time where blacks were not as accepted in Southern states as they are now and I think that overall by them changing what they changed and everything that it made the victory even better because it also stood as the teams way of overcoming all the obstacles they were faced with.

i haven't seen the movie and i probably won't watch it.. they made a big deal out of nothing basically.. Cause at the time there were a few big teams who started 3 and 4 black guys.. Texas Western was the first team to start 5 black guys..
and I've heard and read many times that Rupp wasn't as racist as everyone is making him out to be..
