Eastern Kentucky University 83 Norfolk State 66
#1
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball team used a hot-shooting start and monster second-half run to blow by the Norfolk State Spartans, 83-66, on Monday night at McBrayer Arena.

The Colonels (6-6, 0-0 OVC) started the game 10-of-14 from the field (74 percent), kick started by three-straight buckets from junior Nick Mayo in the paint to open the contest. After the Spartans cut the Colonel lead to one, 9-8, junior Jackson Davis came away with a steal and layup that ignited an 8-0 Eastern run. The spurt was capped by a beautiful Euro-step layup by freshman JacQuess Hobbs, giving EKU a 17-10 advantage. NSU never got any closer the rest of the game.

EKU was led in scoring by Davis, who dropped a season-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Mayo also reached double-figures, scoring 14. Senior Dillon Avare and sophomore DeAndre Dishman scored 12 apiece, while freshman Peyton Broughton added 10. Hobbs contributed by dishing out a game-high eight assists and pulling down a game-high seven rebounds.

After the Spartans scored a basket to begin the second half to drop the Eastern lead down the just nine, 41-32, a Mayo three-pointer began a 21-3 run over the next 8:55 to give the Colonels their largest lead of the game, 62-35.

EKU shot a season-high 52.7 percent from the field and outscored the Spartans in the paint, 36-28. The Colonels also dished out 20 assists, which tied a season-high, on 29 made field goals. Eastern controlled the glass as well, finishing the game with a 33-23 rebounding advantage.

Eastern opened up the game further, starting at the 6:28 mark in the first half, when Mayo faked out his defender with a no-look pass and found Davis for the two-handed flush. Moments later, Mayo caught the ball inside the arc and was immediately fouled by his defender. It was not enough, however, as the Oakland, Maine native was able to flick the ball behind his head to convert the hoop and the harm, making the score 35-19.

Norfolk State (1-11) was led in scoring by Mastadi Pitt, who had a game-high 19 points.

The Colonels close out non-conference play at Marshall on Friday, December 22. Tip in Huntington is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
