What is the rule on post season practice and play? I see all the area baseball teams playing ... JCHS, PHS, GCHS, LCHS, Etc... However the softball folks say they are not allowed to practice or play until Feb. 15th. I was wondering what the difference was. Any thoughts?

Well, to be honest with you, I'm pretty sure that it is the same with baseball. I know we weren't allowed to start till then. We could play on the field but a Coach was not allowed to be present, telling us what to do and those sorts of things. But on that date is when the OFFICIAL practice can start. I guess the others are breaking the rules or going by something else.

Here's the link to Bylaw-25. It basically says that the coaching staff (paid or unpaid) cannot "coach" student-athletes in grades 9-12 that have played for them in the past. Whether that be varsity, jv, or freshman. "Sports specific skills cannot be taught, refined, developed, or evaluated" by the coaching staff.

However, if you want to have an open-field (like basketball has open-gym) where the coach or certified teacher is present in case an accident occurs - that is legal. The coach just can't do the stuff mentioned above.

Best scenario would be to find some volunteers that do not coach the h.s. team in anyway, to coach a fall league team. I'm sure that's what Greenup, Boyd, and other schools are doing. This is perfectly legal.

Thanks for the info. This should be useful to everyone.
