A long time until the season starts, but you can never start talking to early. The early favorites have to be North (return a lot from last years cinderella team), Bell (The new coach will help them a lot), South (Lost a lot, but will still be competitive, Knox (Once they find a coach they should be one of the top teams around), Corbin (The loss of Leddington will hurt them a lot but they will still be a solid club), and Middlesboro (Not as talented as years past, but still a solid team.)
I think the sleeper this year will be Clay County. Return 8 starters from last year, and could be getting more help. They were mostly 8th graders & freshman last year and were still competitive with the top teams in the region. They are still very young, but I think they have the talent to make some noise this year. Griffin will definately give them everything he has, it's going to be up to how the boys perform.

is the 13th down this year??? I have heard rumors they are not as good as the 14th, 15th, or 16th this season...Is there any truth to that??

The 13th region isn't loaded with the normal South Laurel & Middlesboro teams. Well, not the experience those teams normally have. The region is mostly young, but if the young kids step up then I think the 13th region champ will be tough to deal with in sectionals. I think the 13th region junior all star team beat the 14th and 15th this summer.

"Junior" all stars, as in 3rd year of h.s. In actual ages, I guess that means prob 16-17 yr olds?

If I'm not mistaken, the 15th Region Junior All-Stars defeated the 13th Region Junior All-Stars. I do believe all three teams went 1-1 in the games.

Coach Payne is going to do just fine this season with KC. He was an assisstant last season so he knows what he has to work with. KC didnt loose much, and gained some good talented youth. They got good hitting, defence, and pitching.

so who is the favorite to win the 13th this season?
02-19-2008, 04:35 PM
I think the 13th is open to a number of teams. The natural favorite has to be North Laurel or Middlesboro judging from the regional tournament from last season. However, there are a number of teams in the hunt. South Laurel is always tough. Clay County has a good team back with a lot of returning players. Bell County has a new coaching staff while returning most of the players from last year. Corbin will be good as usual. Harlan will be tough coming off a good season a year ago. Knox Central can never be counted out. Williamsburg and Whitley County will contend.
I think my favorite at the moment is North Laurel, with the sleeper being Bell County.

It is wide open, but not necessarily because of the lack of talent, but more due to the increasing number of competitive teams this season. Even Lynn Camp is well coached and will compete more this season as well as Barbourville and some other teams that usually aren't.

What do you know about Lynn Camp's new coach?

I know the 15th region is really strong this year and I was just wondering what the sectional tournament may look like.

I just seen in the first preseason poll that North Laurel has the highest ranking with 8 votes I think.

David Bullard was the head coach last season. Lynn Camp posted 12 wins against a pretty tough schedule. Seemed to be well-coached last season, but unsure how they will perform this season. Did put up good outings in tournament play however. I don't expect them to be a regional contender, but, according to who's on the mound, they may not be an easy victory either.
I know he's been there since at least 2004, maybe longer, but the last couple of years they have posted double digit numbers in the wins columns while playing good teams tough on occasion.
