Breathitt County vs Somerset. Thoughts?

I'm really liking what I'm seeing out of Somerset. Their offense is coming together nicely with the o-line improving weekly as I predicted would happen. The play calling against Lincoln Co reminded me more of what we saw in the Perry Co game with multiple playmakers giving a chance for Hughes to breathe. The passing game is good - the running game is good ... and that d-line is nasty! I don't think Breathitt can hang with them. I say Somerset takes this one by 2 or 3 scores.

IMO whoever wins this game wins the district

Going with Somerset

Huge district game for the bobcats. A few weeks ago I thought Somerset would roll but I think the bobcats will have a chance in this one. Hollan to Sperry connection has been nice last two weeks. I hope to see in a few more times this week. Bc 30-24

I agree this is a huge district game. I think Breathitt co OL gonna have a hard time giving Hollan enough time to stand back and throw to sperry. They kept campbellsville QB pretty much in check. They intercepted him twice and he is a good QB. Can Breathitt get the ball enough to sperry to make a difference, I don’t know. But what I do know is Somerset has gotten better each week and if they play like they have the last couple of weeks I think they win by 2-3 scores. Winner of this game wins the District IMO.

I think Somerset wins this one. They have shown some great improvement, and I'm excited to see how they build from last week.

This will be an absolute war!!!

I guarantee, more emphatically than Joe Namath’s guarantee……the winner will be determined by turnovers or big plays in the special teams!!!

If Bobcats take care ball they will have chance beat Somerset. Breathitt is a lot better than there record shows. Defense has be better for Bobcats. I honestly think every who wins turnover battle wins game. Bobcats have played really tough schedule. They have come out ready from opening kickoff. I really think this will be alot better game than Briar jumpers are expecting

I watched Letcher run all over Breathitt last week and I think Somerset will do the same. Somerset big in this one.

You think Somerset has a better defensive line then belfry or Johnson Central hollon did fine against them without Sperry

That would be a statement to the district if this outcome held true.

I bet close and into the 4th quarter. I feel like the teams are similar in talent but the coaching and home field advantage is all Somerset.

Your right they did I think Letcher line is better than Somerset line but if bobcats play defense like that it be long night but wait see these teams are a lot closer than you think. Bobcats had costly turnovers that killed them. There young have learn how fight through adversity. But they had a lot yards vs Letcher just need put in the end zone and finish drives.

Breathitt will have to play a flawless game to keep it close. I don’t see this happening. Briar jumpers by three TD’s.

Considering Belfy beat them 56-26 and Johnson Central beat them 56-35 ... I'm not sure I'd consider that "doing fine" - but by all means if Breathitt considers that doing fine then I may need to reconsider by original prediction on the outcome of this game.

The question that will be answered tomorrow night is this:

For several years, Breathitt has been criticized for playing too weak of a schedule. This year, they beefed up the pre-district schedule; will this have them hardened for district play and can they make the adjustments to win their district and be ready for a playoff run?

A good indicator will be how they react in a tight game with Somerset. Will a lack of discipline rear its head; will personal fouls extend “scoring” drives for Somerset; and will Breathitt be able to sustain four quarters of quality football?

Breathitt played BELFRY tight and respectable for a half.

I like see Bobcats put a complete game together. I know there really young but that only excuse last for so long . They’re going into there 7th game. You see glimpses that make you think wow they look good then they do other stuff that just frustrating. If they put all together they’re very dangerous team. They just have learn how play through adversity. Defense has be better.

. The thing about playing a tough schedule is you have to win some of those games it does nothing for a team if they play tough teams and lose it’s nothing. If just playing a thought schedule was all it took teams like Jenkins would be the top team in the state because every game they play is tougher competition. And as far as playing good for a half that second half counts too that’s the reason they have 2 halfs good teams make adjustments and win games and outlast teams.

I guess we will see tonight!!!!! If young Bobcats get some confidence watch out. When start as many Freshman and underclassmen as they do they have a lot room to grow. Most people not giving Bobcats a chance in this one but if they can come out firing on all cylinders this be good game. To me the key is run game for Bobcats on offense. If they have success in run game to set up pass . Win turnover battle and tackle care of ball on offense and finish drives . Then Bobcats have to tackle better on defense.

Somerset is loaded with talent and it prevails in this game

You are helping to make my point; whether you meant to or not.  I wasn’t suggesting that playing a good team tough for a half was a “win”; merely, it shows that they can compete in spots with good competition.

The Breathitt teams of old were barely lathered up at halftime, and the fourth quarter was brutal for most opponents.  So, yes obviously the second half matters.

And playing a tough schedule, can help you even in losses.  I remember a Belfry team that had five losses and won a state title.  They had another one that started the season 1-4 and made it to the state semis.

Any reason why this isn’t on the KHSAA schedule for either team?

14-0 Somerset at the half. The Jumpers fumbled into the end zone for a touchback on one drive, had another drive short-circuited by a personal foul, and a third on a had shotgun snap. Breathitt had one good drive but turned it over on downs. The Somerset scores came on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Bruner to Kris Hughes and a 55 yards pick six by Zach Koger.
