Belfry has played in 6 state title games, though I've only seen three of them.
The years were '79, '85, '86, '03, '04, and '07.
Since I've only seen three I will only rank those opponents by which team I thought was the best.
1. Elizabethtown
2. Louisville Central
3. Owensboro Catholic
I think the other opponents were Franklin-Simpson in '79, Paducah Tilghman in '85, and Owensboro in '86. I could be mistaken though.

Is that the order you would rank those teams?
I thought Mercer Co. was two times as good as OC.

I was in attendance for all 6 of those and we could have easily been 5-1 in title games. The '79 game was a no contest, throw in the white flag kind of game. Franklin-Simpson, with UK coach Joker Phillips was dominate.

I just listed them in order of time frame, I did not get to see the 78 game, but was at the other 2. I would say winning the first one in 78 was a feat to accomplish. Again in 2005 casue we won it again. I think that the 2006 loss to Merger was a great accomplishment since we played a 5A school in a AA bracket and we almost won it, on the scoreboard. Well if anyone was there they know what happened. Anyway we can keep our heads up and know that we were the best team in AA that year.

Heck, I even like most of Russell's fans. But Russell was not the best team in AA that year. Without the trophy, it means nothing. Same for Belfry last year. I'll also say this, if it was Belfry that played in that game instead of Russell, I still would say the same thing. You play the hand that is dealt to you and if you lose, you lose. I agree Russell has nothing to be ashamed of, but the best they were not.

You cant beat the officals, and the system. Just my opion.

But, that still doesn't take away from the fact that Mercer came home with the title. Russell did not win. Russell was a great team that year and I rooted for them to win. Great teams find ways to win, even in bad situations. They came up short. I could sit here and say Belfry should have won if it wasn't for this or that. But I won't, because they came up short and got beat. The score at the end is all that matters.

I was at that game. IMO, Russell should've won that game.

Russell was the best team in 06 in 2 A football we played a team that was 5 A so yes russell was the better team, and thats teh bottom line cause i said so.

Keep on crying about it...I'm sure they'll forge over that trophy sooner or later.

Mercer won. They were a very good team no matter what class they were in. Russell had their chances and did not capitalize. Thats all that matters.

You are showing your age b_s....Prestonsburg played Mayfield in 93. They beat Danville at Danville in the semi's on a goal line stand to end Danville's 42 game winning streak. Prestonsburg should have beaten Mayfield in the State Title game, if it wasn't for a ghost holding call that negated a Seth Hyden TD.

heh, MerGer County...
I love it!
Russell's '06 team was the best 2A team, even though they weren't the best team IN 2A, if that makes any sense. Best TEAM I've ever seen on a HS field. They played as one, everyone supported eachother. You could tell they'd been on the same field together for a LONG time. After the lesson they gave my Pirates the week before, I thought for sure that MerGer was going to go down HARD.
I put Etown first, Central 2nd, and OC 3rd, but that's just me. All 3 were great teams. I wouldn't know about the others.

Newport Central Catholic has made it to the carpet 7 times (winning 3). There opponets were:
1. Mayfield (2)
2. Fort Knox
3. Danville (3)
4. Fort Campbell
All of the above schools have had great athletes come through as well as great tradition. If I had to pick the tuffest competition, it would be for our District Title and not the State Title. We usually faced Beechwood, and the winner knew that they would have a good shot at going all the way. I am not saying that it was a lock (Ft. Campbell proved that last year), but we felt confident enough to play anyone after knocking off Beechwood, espically in that type of playoff atmosphere.
