Obama Inaugural Most Expensive Ever; May Cost $150 Million
#1
During a time of a stock market crash, retirement investments desimated, and people losing their jobs every week, I'm glad we still have the money to party

A recent Associated Press article said that the price tag for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration gala may cost as much as a record $150 million. The inaugural committee has raised more than $41 million from private sources to cover events ranging from a Philadelphia-to-Washington train ride to a megastar concert with Beyonce, U2 and Bruce Springsteen, and 10 official inaugural balls. However, the massive costs of security, transportation, and the historic inauguration will be borne by yours truly (and the rest of the American taxpayers).

In 2005, Reps. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., and Jim McDermott, D-Wash., asked President Bush to show a little less pomp and be a little more circumspect at his party. The Democrats thinking was that, with the nation at war, excessive celebration by Republicans was inappropriate.

Yet, despite the current economic crisis, Democrats are silent about the record breaking costs of the Obama inaugural. Four years later, the nation is still at war, unemployment has risen sharply, and Obama has pressed Congress to release the second half of a $700 billion bailout package in hopes of rescuing a faltering banking industry, but the Democrats say it's OK to "Party Hearty".
What do you think? Should U.S. Presidents have an expensive "coronation" like European royalty, or is it indicative of an imperial Presidency that has gotten out of hand?

And what about the sensitivity to the times? Should our elected officials reign in all spending when times are tough and average Americans are experiencing hard times, or do the taxpayers need a good celebration to cheer them up when times are tough

Not only the cost issue, but sweeping the very people the Democratic party say they work so hard for, under the rug during the inagreation. there ridding the DC area of all the homeless and other street people during the ceromonies. Just your typical Washington double standard.

IMO, a lot of this money is necessary. Some places are reporting anywhere from 1 million to 2 million people showing up for the inauguration. With that many people you HAVE to have security, porta-potties, etc. Those things aren't free or cheap.

On top of that, you better bet that there will be several security measures we don't hear or know about.
