Classic cars
#1
I was just wondering, do any members on here have a classic car that they are restoring or have already restored?
#2
Ive restored a few, depending on what your definition of classic is..Ive restored a '78 Z28 that Id give my pinky toe to have back, a '70 Superbee that I got with a non original 440 (that came out of a '70 Imperial) that was a nice car, but a nightmare money pit. Ive owned a nice '87 Trans Am GTA that I didnt have to restore, two Iroc Z's (87 and 89) that I fixed mint, a '78 Dodge Powerwagon 4x4 that was a nice truck after I got done with it and an old Camaro that I got rid of not too terribly long ago. Ive got the old car/truck fever again and Im wanting to work on another one..as much as I love love LOVE Mopar, theyre just way too expensive to restore, so that KO's the Roadrunner, Cudas, Challengers, Dusters, etc..so Im looking for something sort of different, but still wicked. I love the old '66-'67 Fairlane Fastbacks, '68-'72 Torinos, well, anything Ford related really, and I would love to build a plain jane black '65 Chevy Bel Air (no, not an Impala) with the dog dish caps/steel wheels, with a nice big block (427 or 396), black bench interior, and a 4 speed..old GM cars are great builders. Pontiac, Buick and Oldsmobile all pumped out some amazing cars back in the day as well..what are you working on 504?

i love mopar too. and i would love to own an old challenger someday. but with being a college student i definitely dont have the money lol. but my project right now is an 1983 monte carlo ss. i have always loved the look of these cars for some reason, however i dont love the power from the factory, so one thing that is definitley not gonna be original is the engine, ive pulled the weak 305 out to make room for the 355 we are building right now, but im gonna try to keep the interior/exterior as close to original as i can.

Thats an excellent builder bro. I have a big soft spot in my heart for those 83-88 SS Montes..Yeah the factory 305s were weak (for now it is, but for '83 it was a pretty stout motor), but they are great looking cars..I think in '83 the only colors they came in was white with the blue striping and dark blue with the light blue striping..but a Monte SS with a healthy 355 is an excellent build. Post pics of it if you can. Id love to see it. I dont care if your just starting, lol..I just love those old cars. I have so many in my mind that I want to build its ridiculous, lol..One thing though, while youre in college, stick with GM and Ford is moneys tight, because Ive said all along, you can build two nice Camaros for what you can build one drivable Mopar..

Sounds good guys. My dad works on cars for fun whenever his buddies want to do a project. He should have been a mechanic...seriously, it is insane to watch him and his buddies go. It is weird how they work together.

One guy is great at stretching a dollar and keeping everyone orderly and organized (hard to do with engine-heads, lol) he is good at finding cheap parts through Ebay, Craigslist, shopping from store to store, etc...

one guy is great at paint/body-work/interior (most of the times they make him keep the original paint job, lol)

My dad and one of his best friends does engine and transmission work. It is just crazy to me how 4 or 5 guys are so different in what they can do but it all comes together and works out.

I remember when they did a Nova (I think it was a 72), I was a little kid with nothing better to do but watch my dad and his friends work on cars. They worked fast and it is still dad's favorite thing to do, other than go to church......to talk about cars, Big Grin (JUST KIDDING)

My brother has rebuilt several '87 Buick Grand Nationals.

He is working on another one now, but it'll probably take some time as he is getting ready to start racing his other GN.

The holy grail of the 80s muscle cars right there man..I seen a GNX once. ONCE, LOL..at Rod Run in Pigeon Forge in 2006 and it had 6900 miles on it. I seen the guy turn down $55,000 for it with my own eyes. He knew what he had. I love the GN's too..

Thanks bro..whats funny about all those articles, is that the GNX was rated at 276 horsepower, but they put out an easy 325-350+ and everybody knew it. You got any pics of those old cars your family worked on???

Yeah, we just went to the Buick Raceday event in Norwalk, OH a few weeks ago. Seen three GNX's there and only one of them where racing. Fast cars!

Seen hundreds of GN's though.

Here is a GNX that won the TSM event:

Is it in Paintsville?

No. It's in storage at Stanton. It has the window sticker still on it, the hat and coat laying in the trunk, just like it came off of the lot. Original price on the sticker is 43K.

Yeah, when they came out they were supposed to run right at 30k, which was about 3 grand more than a Corvette. But because there were so few of them, the markups were outrageous. $43k was a lot of money for a GM vehicle in 1987, lol, but I would say he wouldnt have a problem whatsoever getting $70k for it now..

My brother told me he seen one go for $100k at the Barrett-Jackson car auction on SPEED.
