Owen County 38 Newport 13
#1
In their first home playoff game since 1980, Rebels remain unbeaten (11-0) advance to face Covington Holy Cross next week in Owenton.

Congrats to OC. Actually a little surprised that they beat the Wildcats this handily

Newport had a chance to make things interesting on the last play of the first half, down 21-7 and picking off a Rebel pass deep in Newport territory. It was returned all the way back to the OC 20 as an Rebel ran the Newport returner down as time ran out.

OC then scored two TDs within the first 4 minutes of the third quarter, and the game was pretty much over at 35-7.

Owen threw 3 (I think) picks on the night and had various costly, ill timed penalties...Those mistakes will have to be eliminated if they harbor any thoughts of beating Holy Cross.

Great atmosphere tonight...sure it will be even moreso next week.

Owen County advances to play Holy Cross, Friday at Owen County at 7:30 p.m.

This is surprising since most thought Owen's weak schedule was there only reason for looking as good as they have and some even predicted Newport to pull the upset.

Congrats Owen Co.

Congrats Owen Co.

Owen plays the toughest team on their schedule next week against Covington Holy Cross. IMO, Owen's perfect season ends next week.

Surprised at the final score, maybe I haven't given Owen the respect they deserve.

^ I think a lot of us can say that and now have to step back and respect this team!

Agreed.

Owen's non-district opponents certainly held their own last night in the first round. Western Hills loses by only 6 at Russell. Lloyd pulls the upset in 2A (against OC's district runner-up). Bourbon rolls in 3A, and has a good chance to advance deep into the 3A playoffs. Ludlow thumped Eminence in Class A. Bellevue won big in Class A as well. Now, the district part of their schedule doesnt look so impressive, but nothing they can do about their geography and who the KHSAA pairs them up with in both district and region.

And as far as Holy Cross matchup goes....its certainly a different level than they've played to this point, it'll take a monumental effort to advance past that one. But a loss next Friday doesnt change the fact that this is a really good football team.
