Harold Davis, a 1982 DeSales High School alum who has been an assistant coach the past six years, has been named the Coltsâ head football coach.
This will be the first head coaching job for the 47-year-old Davis, who also was an assistant at Southern for four years. Last August he retired after 22 years as a firefighter.
âI never really had any intentions of being a head coach,â he said. âDeSales is the only place I really wanted to coach. Being an alumni and on the staff, when the job opened I thought it over and talked with my wife and family ⦠and came to the decision to apply for it.â
Davis replaces Mark Sander, who was fired last month. Sander is the schoolâs all-time winningest coach, posting a 76-47 record in 10 seasons.
As a senior in 1981, Davis helped DeSales reach the Class 4-A championship game before falling to Henry Clay 20-7. A safety, Davis went on to play at Kentucky Wesleyan.
As an assistant at DeSales, Davis first worked with defensive backs and for the past three years has called the defensive plays.
He said the Colts likely wonât change much on the defensive end.
âOffensively, we donât have the athletes to stretch the field a lot,â he said. âIâd like to go back to our strong suit and the way we used to do things with ball control and running the clock.â

I'm still not sure why they fired Sanders, but Davis is a good hire for DeSales. I know the fanbase wasn't happy about Sanders exit

I had the pleasure of working with Captain Davis here at the Louisville FD. He's a class act.
