The Washington County baseball team took the field last week for the first time this season, when they traveled to Fern Creek for a scrimmage against the Tigers. Several Commanders were impressive on the mound, as five pitchers combined to no-hit Fern Creek over eight innings.
âWe looked good,â said Head Coach Derek Schuler. âThe pitching and defense looked very solid. Our bats arenât quite there yet for the most part, but thatâs usually the last thing to come.â
Seniors Blake Smith, Connor Riney, Trae Abell and Taylor Wheatley and junior Thomas Spalding stifled Fern Creek hitters throughout the scrimmage.
Washington County managed five hits in the first five innings -- four singles and a double -- including RBI singles from Smith and Abell, but didnât record a hit after the fifth inning. Schuler said the rusty bats werenât a surprise, and said now that the anticipation of getting back on the field is out of the way, his team can focus on getting better.
âA lot of our older guys that weâre going to look to have been playing basketball, and those guys just need more reps, and theyâll get there,â he said. âOn Wednesday, everybody was very anxious and super excited to be playing, but weâve got that out of the way and weâll be ok.â
Schuler also said there is still playing time to be earned in the outfield.
âWe have a couple of outfield positions that are still open and are being battled for. Guys out there showed something on Wednesday and theyâll continue to,â he said.
The Commandersâ scrimmage scheduled for Monday night at home against Spencer County was canceled due to rain. Theyâll open the regular season with a pair of home games on Thursday against Lincoln County at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday against Collins at noon. Theyâll be on the road at Marion County on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Taylor County on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
