Russell Co.-45 N. Laurel-35
#1
Another ugly win for Russell Co., really going to have to get things back on track before district play. Two bright spots, Nick Britt with 266 yards and 5 td's and Lucas Williams with a 49 yard field goal.

North Laurel has really improved under Chris Larkey. He has done better than I thought he could.

NL played great, they had the game won basically. RC could not stop them late in the game from running. North had the ball on their 30 yard line with 2 minutes to go and driving down 3 and the fumble bug hit. North has a good team, tOnigyt showed that.

Is RC going into these games expecting blowouts each week?
They are a lot better than some of these teams thats played them close.

I was told tonight that this Russell Co team right now doesnt even resemble the one from week 1 at Whitley Co. What is wrong with this team?

Russell Co seems to come out each week with a new set of offensive plays. Tonight was no different. I believe that they are extremely focused on using these early games for preparing for the games that matter. Score, total yards, etc. don't seem to matter.

I actually liked most of what I saw during this game. The offense is becoming very balanced, and Nick Britt was spectacular as always. The Jaguars had some long, time consuming drives that kept the Laker D on the field for most of the night. The Lakers scoring drives averaged about 1-minute. So, the D was wearing down late. Nonetheless, each time the Jaguars score the Lakers answered, and when the time started running out, the Nick Britt show started. The last 5-minutes Russell Co. showed what they were capable of....scoring 2-TDs on 5-6 offensive plays.

North Laurel has a couple of really talented players, and played good all night. They should proud of how they performed .......outside of the multiple facemasks on Britt.

This is not the same Laker team as in week 1. This Laker team is proving to have developed a number of offensive sets and will be tough to prepare for down the road.

Game Ball to Lucas Williams for the 49-Yard FG that would have easily made 60+. Not sure what the state record is, but he may break it at some point during the season if he get the opportunity to try.

North Laurel must have a pretty good team this year.

North Laurel looks like the kind of team that will get better as the season goes. That being said, RC is just not performing on cylinders right now.

Are the new sets working on getting other players the ball, or are they trying to find different ways to get the ball in Britt's hands?

Chris Larkey has done what I expected he would do. He works the players hard.

It's a little of both. They are bringing Britt out of the backfield some, running some two back sets, more play action pass, some option, even seen one play of wildcat. I see a team less interested in beating a team by 40 and more interested in using each game as an opportunity to develop. We've also got a couple of young guys at DB that need some playing time. So giving up the occasional big play is okay.

I am afraid that some of our guys are starting to believe the hype. I overheard one of our captains being asked if North Laurel had much this year. He simply responded by rolling his eyes and shaking his head no. I imagine he has a different opinion after last night. We have to work on getting better in all three phases of the game every week! We have to realize that we have put ourselves in a position that we are now taking everyone's best shot. The players, coaches and fans of North Laurel celebrated on the field last night like they had won the game. They should have been proud ....they played their tail off! I hope that our guys don't overlook LCC this week! The last time we played Coach Raines as a big favorite, he made all the right calls and adjustments and knocked us out of the playoffs! We have a ton of talent, we are bigger and stronger this year, we should be able to make a run! We have to realize that no one is going to hand it to us! We have to earn it! Time to get to work!

Where was Russell Co.'s defense?
#14
I don't think having a 3 point lead with 2 mins left to a lesser team was in their plans.

North Laurel is going to win state this season mark it down!!! Best team to ever come out of laurel county, and that includes those fellers down the road South!! North will not lose another game from here on out!!

Now that is funny!

Gentlemen, sometimes the breaks don't come your way and when they don't then your team has to suck it up and work harder in those games. North
Laurel had a great game plan;let's give them credit, but a pick 6 in the first few plays by the Jags and a long touchdown run by a back that the lakers had and let go, then several calls that didn't go the way of the lakers creates the game that we say. Where does the idea come that the lakers are so superior to their opponents that tough games are not gonna happen?? Well I have a news flash...the lakers are a very good team but not a great team that can easily overcome 2 interceptions, some poor tackling on key plays and some tough calls. Big congratulations to the Lakers on winning the close game when things got tough and they didn't have their A-game. Hopefully this will teach them not to panic and dig in hard when playoffs and district start. The lakers need a lot more of these kind of games and the experience that comes with them!

Didn't say it was, but it is in their plans to make this a more developed team by district/playoffs. As good as they were last season, being one-dimensional didn't get them anywhere. The goal has never been to beat these early teams by massive margins, it's been to add a bit of offensive diversity in each game with a goal of being as good as they can be by playoff time. It just so happened that the quick scoring drives we had, and the run, run, run, style of the Jaguars; kept our defense on the field for far too long. When they took the lead with just under 6 to go, the Lakers went back to the old faithful style of offense, and put their best players in on defense and dominated the game. Scoring 2 TDs in less than 4 minutes, and could have scored a 3rd if they had wanted.

I like what I'm seeing, because this will likely be the Lakers best chance for years to come at going deep into the playoffs. Relying solely on Nick Britt will only get them so far..........and they are working on that.

Please IGNORE this poster! They are not a fan, merely someone who stirs stuff up that dislikes North Laurel.

I agree. This will make the Lakers better.

I also think the Jaguars will challenge the Maroons for the district title. I think that they are as good in week 5 as Whitley Co was in week 2. Of course, I think WC has improved since. Nonetheless, the Lakers have beat three 5A teams that may not be top 10, but are closer to the top of the pack than they are the bottom.

Closer than I expected.
