I think that if your team doesn't have at least an overall 5-5 record, your team does not belong in the playoff scene. Not saying that a group of boys doesn't deserve another game, but come on. I'm seeing some really bad football in this first week. Some teams should be embarrassed to say there a 3A or 4A school. Give the top seeded teams a buy, if they don't have a team that qualifies for a three or four spot. This playoff system needs fixed. Your not helping these teams with losing records, by getting the living daylights beat out of them. You can't build a team/program getting beat 60-0. Just my opioion. Looks bad on Ky football.

I spent about $50.00 at the 78-0 blowout I went to. I bet pirate would like to have his taxes raised to offset that loss off revenue. Someone has to pay for the lights,fieldpaint,uniforms,officials,ect... Where do you think that money comes from. Most people(I am sure the kids as well) would like to have an extra game to raise a few thousand dollars.

Its not gonna help me on my taxes one way or another, I'll pay the same amount with or without a first round game. There not going to give us a break, you should know that by now. These teams that I've seen needs confidence, not a$$ whoopings. The better the team, the better the turnout during the regular season.

So long as basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, etc teams who don't have a .500 record are excluded from the playoffs, I'm fine with it.

I agree in some sense with what you're saying but, that kind of format would not work for several reasons. The most obvious reason to me is that every year you have teams that play very tough schedules and the only games they might win that year are their district games which could leave them under .500 but, they may still be as high as a 1 or 2 seed in their district. The best example that I can think of is Louisville Central in 2010 I believe, they went 4-6 in the regular season and won the 3A State Championship.

If you think anyone is making any money off those games, you
are KIDDING YOURSELF.

I want all the high school football I can get. Blowouts or not!! Any game is better than no game! Let them play! You never know! There is always an upset somewhere!

Well you couldn't play six 6A schools out of district if they started this in say two to four years. I know theres gonna be teams that might have a losing record and win their district. You could come up with a formula or something were say no matter what, if you finish first or second, your in. Like I said it just a thought of mine. I have read were theres to many classifications, do you drop down to at least five? Just to have better first round games. College is bad enough with having to win six games, and you get to play in a empty stadium. Nobody likes this either. Yeah theres money generated, but if it was that good you'd still have the same sponsors every year.

Central was 5-5 and finished as state champs at 10-5.

I stand corrected LeeCo. You are correct. Central was 4-6 in 2010.

Once again this same discussion comes up just in a different forum. I dont know how to make this any more clear. These games can be just as necessary as others. 2009 Paducah Tilghman 3a, was 4-6 going into the playoffs. They went all the way and won over the mighty Somerset Briarjumpers who were undefeated until that point. They did it convincinly I might add. Mayfield wasn't far from that in 1993. They lost 4 of their first 5 games and went on to win a state championship as well. Some of this can come from teams with injuries getting healthy at the right time. Some can come from teams playing tougher schedules than others. Some of this can come from finally putting the kids in the right places after tinkering with things after losses. Just look at it this way, if Frankfort played Mayfield's schedule this year, they would be probably 6-4 but they should do well in 1a.

Tilghman was 4-6 when the playoffs started in 2009 and won the 3a title.

Some of these teams that have not won a game are having to travel a couple hours to play I bet there not making any money.

It's not the NFL or about $

I've known kids that were on a poor football team, got crushed in the playoffs, then later in life bragged about getting beaten by the eventual State Champions. It didn't hurt them. They were still successful in life. It just added to their Glory Days stories.

kentucky is trying to make football like basketball. ever team have a shot at winning state title.
ever in the old 4 classes, there was still blowout in the first rounds. the other team was just that much better.
i am with you, if a team is 0-10 they shouldn't be in the playoffs. they should at less won one or two game.

Great thread. Kentucky has developed that "give everybody a ribbon" mentality instead of letting the playoffs be something that you EARN.
11-05-2012, 09:29 AM
It's not give everybody a ribbon. It's give most teams a fair shot at it. The real weakness is at the bottom of 1A.

Don't agree
Perry was 4-6 with losses to Clay, Johnson Central, Prestonsburg, Whitley, Harlan County, and Somerset.
They still made it very competitive against Madison Southern and had a lead in that one with a few minutes to go.
