Male 42 Butler 21
#1
Behind a young offensive line that is growing up fast, the Male High School football team continued to light up the scoreboard.

Junior running back Ellis Cain rushed for 233 yards and three touchdowns and the Male defense stood strong in the second half to beat visiting Butler 42-21 on Friday night.

A week after posting 709 yards of offense in a 62-16 rout of Floyd Central, the Bulldogs (2-0) posted 460 yards against Butler. The ground game was especially potent, producing 367 yards on 51 attempts (7.2 yards per carry).

"We finally got some size on our offensive line, and that makes a big difference in these kinds of games and with the schemes we play," Bulldogs coach Chris Wolfe said. "We have two sophomores and two juniors up there, so it looks good for the future."

Left guard Marcus Smith is the only senior on the offensive line and also is the biggest at 6 feet 6 and 370 pounds. Juniors Harrison Shelton and Houston Sparkman and sophomores Noah Bringer and Isaiah Arnold are the other starters on the line.

"They're beasts," Cain said of the line.

Butler (1-1) used some big plays on defense to tie the score at 21 late in the first half but managed just 29 yards of offense and one first down in the second half.

"Our kids had some fight at halftime," Bears coach Gary Wheeler said. "They were ready to go back out and play hard, but it didn't fall our way tonight."

Male scored touchdowns on its first three drives to take a 21-7 lead, the last coming on Cain's 54-yard run late in the first quarter. He finished the period with 152 yards and two TDs on 12 attempts.

Wolfe said Butler's speed in the secondary took away some of Male's passing game and forced the Bulldogs to run.

"I feel like we have the best offensive line in the state," Cain said. "We just ran the ball because we felt like that was the weakness of their defense."

Butler got back in the game behind its defense. Kermit Malone had an 80-yard interception return to set up a 20-yard touchdown run by Joe Hines that pulled the Bears within 21-14 with 7:09 left in the first half.

On Male's next possession, Butler's Ta'Vaughn Morton picked off a tipped pass and raced 77 yards for a touchdown that tied the score at 21 at the 2:06 mark.

"I kept trying to do the knockout punch, and we kind of knocked ourselves out a couple of times," Wolfe said. "Our offense let them back in the game, and it was upsetting because our defense played really well."

Avery Haynes' 56-yard kickoff return gave Male good field position on its next drive, and the Bulldogs needed just six plays to regain the lead. Davis Mattingly's 14-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Wilkerson gave Male a 28-21 edge with just 20.6 seconds left in the half.

Cain's third touchdown run - a 2-yarder - gave Male a 35-21 lead at the 9:40 mark of the third quarter, and the Bulldogs' defense dominated from there.

Despite his team's offensive prowess through two games, Wolfe said the Bulldogs have a long way to go.

"I know people will look at the scores, but our passing game wasn't very clean at all," Wolfe said. "This was a good defensive secondary, and we're going to face some other ones. We're not where we need to be."
