Final. Wow.

Could this be a game that puts Coach Derossett on the hot seat? This is a terrible loss. I realize Powell has a nice team but no matter how you look at it folks Prestonsburg was not suppose to lose this game and many expected a route.

WOW I have the score the other way from a source are you sure that Powell Co won. I was told that Prestonsburg won ???

They have some solid athletes and a superb coaching staff.

Tony Burchett is a lot better coach than his counter part tonight or any night for that matter. Powell shouldn't have won this game but the Blackcats got out coached in all phases of the game.

He is one of the best coaches in the state.

Congrats to Powell County.

Congrats to Powell County!!! You have to eat your wheaties and bring you A game when PC has a talented squad and you have to try and beat a Tony Burchett team because they rarely beat themselves.

Could you please explain how someone "out coaches" someone? I think that is the dumbest term used in sports. Coach DeRossett is one of the best coaches in the State. Powell Co. Played a great game obviously, but that doesn't take away from Coach DeRossett's knowledge or ability. Btw..... If anyone thinks he's on the hot seat, well, you don't know very much.

When someone takes a team with less talent than yours and beats you with a better game plan, that means you got out coached.

Wow really thought prestonsburg wouldn't have any trouble in this game. What happened to that offense that looked really good last week?

Might be the worst loss since the latter part of the 90s.
If Betsy Layne beats this team, then the wheels are falling off for the program. Kids are going to continue to lose interest.

I never said Derossest wasn't a good Coach nor did I say anything about his job. All I said was he got out coached. Prestonsburg shouldn't lose to Powell Co. Burchett and his staff obviously prepared better and their team won a game when they were overmatched. Don't be so sensitive. The Blackcats are just down right now.

Great win for Powell!

Really? Are you in a position to explain the game plan of both teams? If so, I would really like to hear it. Teams get upset everyday in sports, it doesn't mean they were "outcoached" "outsmarted" or anything like that. It simply means the underdog pulled an upset.

He coached offensive line the majority of his career and has helped produce some of the best rushing teams in Kentucky High School Football history. The man coached with some of the smartest HC's in the state and knows more about the game than anyone I've ever met (besides Haywood). He made Powell County football a winning football school and took them to their VERY FIRST EVER playoff win and has the record for their winningest season in less than 5 years! Derossett is a phenomenal coach. But as stated before, he got downright "out coached". With the talent P-Burg spits out consistently EVERY YEAR, there's no reason they should lose to Powell County.... Or Pikeville.

Any news on Chatlin from Prestonsburg, does he have a concussion?

I have known Tony Burchett for 25 years. There is no question he knows what he is doing. I never said he didn't. What I am saying is this; Coach DeRossett has crossed the field to shake Phillip Haywood's hand as A WINNER, he has also been to the State Championship. Untill YOU can match that, you ARE NOT in a position to say who out coached who.

When a coach ( Burchett ) takes a team with less talent and tradition and beats a team with more talent and tradition ( Derossett ) that is what you call getting " out-coached".

I'm no doctor, but #33 definitely looked like he had a concussion. Would like to give a shout out to the coaches wife for putting the kids health first. She was on the sideline YELLING at John to take him out.

No doubt this is a bad loss for the Blackcats... But taken in perspective, it shouldn't be such a shocker. Though it's a very entertaining brand of football to watch, it is HIGH risk/reward. When the Blackcats have years without good talent at QB and receiver, the teams struggle. There is no ground and pound game to fall back on simply because the offense isn't geared to work that way. This means O-line techniques emphasized are trapping, pulling outside, and pass blocking with power techniques being used only in short yardage situations.
Otoh, Coach Burchett has always been a coach whose emphasis is -fundamentals-. Wherever he's been, his lines have always showed solid technique. That's never changed. What HAS changed, though, with his maturity in coaching is learning how to motivate players. He's learned different players respond to different methods of handling. Some give their all with a screaming pushy coach, others respond better to quiet words and pats on the back. He's great at treating his players as individuals. Really, Tony was ready to be a head coach long before he took the job at Powell Co..
My point is... Prestonsburg's style of football can result in losses to teams who may have lesser personnel, but play a fundamentally solid game (due to turnovers, having little offensive patience to move chains). The converse is just as true - the Blackcats will occasionally beat teams who have better talent (usually by hitting enough big plays). Of course, whether P-burg is scoring or not, it happens quickly. This causes the defense to be on the field a lot and when not, too many times in poor field position.
No I don't think this loss puts Coach D. on the "hotseat". He IS Prestonsburg football as we currently know it. You simply have to take the bad with the good. Nothing about that is unusual. Even Coach Haywood at Belfry was seen (outside the program, mostly) as being on a "hotseat" - before Belfry broke through with their first Finals appearance, they were 0-9 in Regionals.
Just a few thoughts from an old Blackcat fan...

Does anyone know the status on Chatlin?
Nice post oneijoe.
