Russell names T.J. Maynard head football coach
#31
Maynard should do well at Russell.
#32
And the kids should do well. Heard they're already working harder than they ever have.
#33
Don't sleep on Russell this season. I expect a lot.
#34
I expect alot out of Russell as well. TJ has a onack for getting alot out of his players. My question is this, and i IN NO WAY, think this will happen. But what if Russell continues on the path they have and exit the 2nd round of te playoffs the next few years? Do thy give tj the time he DESERVES to get theball moving or do the cries of "hang him" start coming out of the woodwork?
#35
I don't see them doing that to him. I know the next 2 years Russell should be really good. Not sure how deep we will go into the playoffs but not too many weaknesses. I think the true fans know that a good coach can only do so much. There has to be talent. Love McGlone but just think what Lance Evans could have done with TJ as his coach.
#36
I agree. I just looked at it like this. McGlone is dang near football royalty across the state. In this area, his name is tops when it comes to hs football. Seeing what happened to him at the end of his career, even after all of the praise given to him over the years, he was still sent on his way. Hopefully the powers that be, over there in Hell's kitchen and Flatweeds, will give TJ plenty of time, no matter what the outcome may be in his first 5 seasons. Which I dont think they hired him for a short term fix. TJ will probably be at Russell until he decides to leave.
#37
Tjs first three years will be better than the last three at Russell.
#38
I agree with that mightydog. I would say all of the McGlone, for a lack of a better word "drama", has been a bit of a destraction to some of the players. It's hard for kids to believe whole heartedly in a coach when people are constantly raking him over the coals. Whatever the reason. I dont feel like McGlone wan unfit as a coach. The man did hae an incredible career. But it was time for a change. I think Maynard coming o board will rekindle the fire that has kind of went dim in Russell for the last few years. Couple that with the tallent that Russell has coming back, should make for a great season. Good luck to TJ and the rest of the Russell squad. Did any coaching changes take place as far as JV/FROSH ate concerned?
#39
Coach McGlone was sound and fit for the job. Most of the fans from the stands would watch coach as he short stepped his way along the sidelines pushing his walker and assume the man had one foot in the grave. Sit and talk with him in the office and it's a total different story. The man knows football. The mans mind is still sharp. Don't get me wrong. I believe it was time for a change. His ground and pound offense was effective but less efficient against quicker squads. TJ knows enough old school and new school to be very successful. People don't realize that Russell have a whole lot of screen pass, bubble pass, waggle pass and long pass plays in their arsenal. Just never used them. Lol
#40
^^^truth. Russell has only used about 1/3 of the playboom over the last half a decade or so. I think the last time they opened things up much was when Tyler Jones was at QB.
#41
Russell will not be using their old playbook. TJ is going to the Tony Franklin System.
#42
Much like the bone and wing t offenses have countless passing plays that many do not use, the Franklin System is great to run out of. I think you will see the Devils in an Ace 2x2 package and let the qb read the c gap defender and run alot of zone read stuff. More running for russell...just out of different looks
#43
I agree. I think someone asked him if he will be running a spread offense to the likes of what Raceland ran and he mentioned that he wouldn't know until he got a good look at the athletes he had and dictate off of that. I can guarentee you won't see a "5 Dive" five times in a row. Lol
#44
No but u very well may see 32 Iso a few times consecutively lol. He loves running the A and B trap a few times, then jet or stretch, the 32 again, come back with a ahot down the field. Then repeat. He will keep things from becoming stagnent though.
#45
If it aint broke dont fix it. If they cant stop the run, he wont throw the ball. And thas good football. (See the Pikeville and Fairview games)
#46
And you can still run trap, sweep, Joker, and counters out of the spread and gun formations in this system.
#47
^^^thats what I love about it. Especially if u have a qb with the ability to move. Running out of a 2x2 makes them use all of their secondary guys. Which leaves little to know help on C/D gap. I have a feeling that Russells offense will look alot like Raceland's when it is all said and done.

Anybody hearing Greenup head coach Mullins going to Russell to coach with TJ?
#49
I have heard Mullins will be making move to Russell as a position coach, I would guess running backs or wr's. I also keep hearing Grizzle is still coming in as OC.
#50
I would say until it happens. Much like the "will Maynard go to Russell" talk began as soon as he started beating McGlone, the "Will Grizzle leave" talk will never subside until he leaves(if he ever does)
#51
Looks like they had a good spring practice. A lot of team unity and excitement. A few skill players missing out because of baseball but looked as if the linemen all got a good workout.
#52
I was wondering how practice was going. Glad to hear the good report. Except for the bb players, did it look like all the underclass were back?
#53
In my opinion they have looked great at all the spring practices. A lot pads popping. They have all bought into TJ's program and as he continously tells them that championships are won in the off season. They are all getting bigger, stronger, faster and in shape. One of the things I've enjoyed the most during spring practice is sitting at the practice field talking to coach McGlone who was the biggest influence in my life when I played for him 30 years ago. I could listen to that man talk all day. It means a lot to everybody coach. The players, coaches and the intire community. You will forever be Russell Football.
#54
Sounds like they've done more hitting this spring than they use to do all year. I'm excited to see how this all comes together this fall. I believe they will have a good stable of young backs.
#55
Roughly 102 more days till meet the devils. Excited for this team and the caliber of players we should have.
