Morgan resigned as East Ridge coach

KHSAA has East Ridge with 487 students as of last year. Elkhorn City was bigger than the other two, if I remember correctly, so probably no more than 100-130 students for the other two.
Greenup County has 3 high schools; Greenup County High School (3A), Russell Independent (3A) & Raceland Independent (1A). Greenup is currently 4A but will drop down next year.

Hardin, Fayette, Jefferson and Warren have more than that also - none have three with an average of 160-170 students though, which is what East Ridge is divided into three.

I knew Feds Creek was tiny, but I thought Elkhorn City was the biggest - my mistake. I didn't think Millard had football. I remember when Elkhorn City actually had a pretty good team.

I’m willing to say the land mass covered by East Ridge is just as large as any school in the state. From Grapevine to Greasy Creek up to sycamore and down old side. That is a haul.

yes Millard and FC didnt have football and the populations of those areas have not warmed up to the sport

That would be interesting to check.
I did go to Phelps once and that was an experience.
Harlan County goes 30 miles to the Virginia line past Evarts and 30 miles another way past Big Laurel to the Perry County line, then 20 miles past Cumberland to the Letcher line and 15 past Cawood to the Virginia line.
Perry Central covers 30 miles from Leatherwood and a good distance to where the Buckhorn area starts.

It's just my opinion but if the pike co ass'n super would have let us start in A which was possible and we had a couple good years it would have got the program off to a better start Also the principal firing Eric Ratliff the first year was a major mistake.

Millard never had football, and neither did Feds Creek. Millard definitely would be the bigger if re-opened. The elementary school is 700+ thru 8th grade if I'm not mistaken.

And to the other poster, Class A was NEVER an option for East Ridge. I think they were given option of AA though. Probably should have taken that, I agree with you on that. Honestly believe they should have had East Ridge as a consolidation of Elkhorn and Feds Creek and left Millard alone. That likely would have been the better overall option

Football is a dieing sport anyway. Probably dont even need to have a football team. What is their numbers anyway? Do they have good feeder schools in football? Best kids in that area gonna drive over to Belfry or Pikeville to play.

I’m not saying a school HAS to have a football team but I strongly disagree that it is a dying sport.

the KHSAA rule stated in a new school they can play foe 2 yrs in the class of the highest class of schools combined. so that would have been A as EC was A

To say it's dying is an overstatement.

But, let's just say that it's ailing. It's not dying, it's not on it's death bed. But it needs some medical attention, or else is very well could die.

Numbers are down just about everywhere in America. The narrative about football is changing, and those at the forefront of football haven't done a good job adapting to it.

Numbers are down at many schools because kids don't want to "play" football, don't want to compete and don't want to grow and mature. They want it to be easy and they want to win NOW. Parents the same way.

Fortnite has taken a big number of kids at every level away from sports in general.

You are wrong. It's in Greenup Co. Boyd County schools are; Ashland Blazer, Boyd Co, Fairview, Rose Hill and Holy Family. The last 2 are private, not public.
