Kentucky in the NCAA Sweet 16 at the same time had a lot to do with the lesser numbers. But the state tournament attendance will never be what it was back in the heyday of the 1980s into the 1990s. Back in the day schools could buy tickets and rooms for all their coaches and wives and administrators and for the past 20 years that has been seriously curtailed by state regulations. But the biggest reason for lower attendance is the streaming services. Fans can sit in the comfort of their homes and watch the entire tournament on the big flatscreens for a $15 subscription fee and not worry about tickets, parking and driving.
