We been taking the boat out to Paintsville Lake alot this Spring and Summer. Mostly after big bluegill and shellcrackers.
A few weeks ago we accidentally
stumbled upon some crappie. We've been back twice with the sole purpose of targeting crappie and not done to good. We caught a few but not what we were hoping. Most crappie averaged around 10in long. That's pretty good for a average catch. Some even going 12-13 inches. Very healthy looking fish.
Normally when we target crappie we hit brush piles and stick ups. We found those mentioned above near a channel between two points. Believe next time we'll hit some brush piles.
September and October, the crappie fishing should get better. We're still learning how to read our fish finders. I'm not good at all with technology, my brother's the same way lol Normally I just throw around brush and sticks while crappie fishing, the old school ways still work
Even November and after is a good time to target crappie. They're a fish you can catch year around. Once we beat this heatwave again, the fishing should get better, at least hopefully Lol
I forgot to mention the main bait we were catching those crappie on was small shinners. That's what we done best on. Caught a few on crappie and bass minners.
We threw some tube jigs, small spinners, and trout magnets but never done any good on any of those.
Used to catch alot of crappie years ago on a little jig called a, Popeye Jig. It was basically a little feathered jig. Tipped with a minner, wax worm, or meal worm, those were lethal little jigs. We would flat burn the crappie up on those things. I'd really like to find some more of those things.

Used to do most my crappie fishing at Yatesville and Dewey. Paintsville a little but mostly those other places.
Fishtrap Lake in Pike Co is supposed to be a good crappie fishing place. Got some buddies that fish it every Spring. Most years they catch some crappie there 15 inches +

Still getting some crappie, some of them going 12-13 inches. That's really good crappie right there but we're not getting many.
Past little bit I've been studying crappie fishing alot. Reading articles online and watching many YouTube videos. Richard Gene the Fishing Machine is my all-time favorite youtuber. Plus I think he's the best all around fisherman I've ever seen. Plus the way he acts and jokes around reminds me alot of myself Lol.
Richard Gene must have sensed something was in the air. That Ole Kong here and many like me needed some help, with these stubborn summer time crappie. So the other night he comes out with a summer time crappie fishing video. Plus I've been watching his many other crappie fishing videos.
Let's just say I believe the tide here is about to turn. Next time I hit the lake, I'm now armed with not just my fishing gear, but a newly found wealth of knowledge. Those crappie don't know what they're in for now
