5A District 8 2008

It's early, but what does everybody see happening in this district? Letcher Central went undefeated in district play to win the title last year, what will everybody bring to the table this year?

clay county is going to be very tough team to beat next year. Zach lewis is still on the hunt of breaking tim couchs record for most passing yards.so look for them to be dangerous.Perry Central is going to be pretty decent next year as well.Gosh i didnt think i would ever hear myself saying that, but is true demtri travis is a key player returning so look for them to get him the ball for big plays. thats all i know right now about the teams in this district. but i can find out some info on whitley county later on.

I was somewhat impressed with Letcher Central when they came up to Highlands. Really liked what I saw in Banks at the qb spot. He'll be back stronger and better this year. If he has some receivers coming back or stepping up, I think he'll pass for a lot of yards. I will say that their line play has to improve. They need to get a lot quicker and faster. They looked strong, but they were way too slow

The word down in Whitley is that Jim Black is going to be given one more year to turn things around. Black has been a head coach for 7 years. 5 of those 7 years have been losing seasons including 3 two win seasons. At Whitley, he is 4-17.

When you consider Black's track record, it is highly unlikely that Whitley will be very good next year. Whitley has the talent to be a good squad, but Black will find a way to lose 7 or 8 games. Finding a way to lose is a Black hallmark.

I see Letcher being improved even though they had 10 sr's. Undefeated Jv team will bring quicker, bigger linemen and all will benefit from 2nd year in weightroom. If they can find a go-to guy to replace Brock-----watch out!!!!

Losing 4 out of the 5 offensive linemen will definitely hurt. It will take an incredible ammount of work to replace what they lost up front, but it can be done. I think experience (or a lack thereof) will hurt the Cougars in that area especially.

As long as they continue to hold the 6 or so 7th graders back each year, look for Letcher County Central to win the district every year. Great administration can get you a long way!Wink

Would you care to elaborate?

I think it pretty clear to anyone involved with high school athletics at least in Eastern Kentucky where good athletes (that are actually interested in playing sports) are few and far between, that you need 4 to 8 holdbacks in each class to be competitive.

Every school does it. Some do in more in one sport than in others. Clay County basketball and Corbin football come to mind but anywhere you see a tradiational winner you will find a long term hold back policy.

Some people do not like, but generally this is a sour grapes attitude from losing teams. In well over 90% of the cases, holding kids back is very beneficial to the child. They perform better socially athletically and academically. They are more mature and focussed when they hit the college campus. This is particularly true for males since they normally mature later than females.

It basically comes down to whether you had rather your child spend his eighteenth year away from home on a college campus or at home under your supervision and that of his high school.

HOw would you like for me to elaborate? Do I name names? It doesn't take much more than the head coach himself during a parent meeting with the middle school programs telling how he held his sons back and how beneficial it was for them. Take a look at the middle school football programs and the basketball programs, even the girls, to see what they are doing.

PossumBait, it doesn't make it right when the 7th. graders being held back are asked to do so by the coaches and for athletic reasons. Not every school district allows this and deams this as inappropriate and unprofessional behavior. It is one thing for a parent to want to hold their child back, but it is another if the high school coaches are pushing this. By the way, I thought you were all about doing the professional thing when talking about Coach Black? I bet if he was doing this you would be complaining about it and not supporting it.

My point is, how can high school coaches organize and carry out these 7th. graders being held back?

P.S. My aunt was one of the parents who was at the meeting!

I just wanted to know if you were talking about any program specifically, and obviously you are. I do completely agree with you that holding kids back only for athletics is not right. If you are going to hold a kid back it should be done very early and only for age/maturity reasons.
Now, lets get back on topic and save those discussions for another thread.

I can only speak for the kids that I have known that were hold backs. They generally have done very well after being held back. There arer always exceptions to every issue. On the athletic side, you have to remember that regardless of what your school does, your competion will be fielding 19 year old seniors. If you want your child to be competitive, I recommend that yo give him the same advantage.

Im sry but IMO perry wont have much nxt year, i believe they lose too much to be contenders nxt season. They lose most if not all their line, as well as eric back...so idk if the commodores will make much noise nxt season...
#14
I was thinking the same thing about PCC. But you never know I guess, they weren't suppose to make any noise this year.

i see the best game being between Lcc and Clay besides that not much else in district the games could swing either way
#16
from what i hear clay pretty much lost everyone except lewis to graduation. if i had to pick im saying lcc should win this district hands down.
