Greatest Games in 15th Region History

Nor were Hall and Keys even comparable to Williamson and Dotson!! Thus another person verifying that Belfry was without question the best team that year.

I also think they were in a couple of tournaments that year, one of which was I think the Ashland Invitational, although I'm not positive on that.

I don't know why you said in the second post that there weren't any teams in the region that could have "handled" that Belfry team, when in the first post you admit that SV had every opportunity to win the game. I would say that having a shot to win it within the last minute would mean that SV "handled" Belfry pretty well, don't you think?

Look, you're going to have your opinion, and I'm going to have mine. Maybe we can agree that SV had the better guard play and Belfry had the better inside game, and that clash of styles is what made the game such a classic.

A Lafayette team that was completely destroyed by Tates Creek(3 times, once by 40+)who in turn barely beat Belfry? Point taken!!Wink

And yes, SV did have opportunities to win that game but take into account the combined output of Hylton and Hager for that game. Without question the worst game either had played all year YET SV still couldnt find a way to pull the upset. So yes IMO it would have taken all the stars to align for Belfry to lose to SV, if that means that SV could "handle" Belfry then my previous statement is revoked.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree but the bottom line is SV, along with the rest of the 15th, had their chances to dethrone the Pirates and none had the ability to do so.

Elkhorn City beat Sheldon Clark 1 pt. in, I think, double overtime in regional semi-finals 1993. John Slone of SCHS missed a last second shot at horn sounded. Match up of legendary coaches Roger Harless at SCHS and Randy McCoy at E C. Last game Harless coached at SCHS until his return this year. Also, I think the same year SCHS beat Paintsville in district tournament on buzzer beater by Brad Tiller. SCHS Gym went into pandemonium. :Cheerlead

Didn't JCHS have a great team in '91 as well? Isn't that the year they had Salisbury 6"11" Conley 6'6", Fairchild 6'5" (pretty good for hs, some colleges don't have that height) They had no guard play.

I believe Salisbury and Fairchild were still there but Im almost positive that Conley graduated a year earlier. Still a pretty good team along with the rest of the participants that year.

You are right. It is so hard to remember exactly when everyone graduated. Still in 90 that was a pretty good front line in the 15th that didn't win the region.

Actually Im not 100% sure but I believe they didnt even make the tournament in '90. FWIW all three of these guys ended up on the same roster at Alice Lloyd for at least one season. And the Conley kid really matured into a beast in college but wasnt nearly the factor in high school.

Chuck Taylor Wrote:I am sure a couple of Wheelwright games have to be mentioned as some of the best. Not for sure against who. Can anyone help me out? I do remember a close game between Virgie and Wheelwright wayback. Best I remember it was a very very close finish....

I remember the 1976 (or 77) District Title game between Wheelwright and McDowell...

The Trojans won it in a close game. That team was led by Jeff Riley. He had the prettiest jumper and best accuracy from deep in the corner I've seen.

Yeah I've heard my dad talk about that game. He said Jeff made life very easy as a guard.
