Best 80's rock band: Game 1
#1
In recognition of the terrible job that the BCS has done in crowning a true national champion, I thought I would take a stab at creating an 8 team (band) tournament, ran over the next 6 weeks to crown the best 80's band.

In week 1 we have Loverboy versus Cheap Trick. Who do you take?

Loverboy: Canadian rock group formed in 1980 in Calgary, Alberta. Throughout the 1980s, the band accumulated numerous hit songs in Canada and the United States, making four multi-platinum albums and selling millions of records.

"Turn Me Loose" (1981) #35 US Pop, #6 US Rock, #3 AUS
"The Kid Is Hot Tonite" (1981) #55 US Pop, #42 US Rock
"Working for the Weekend" (1981) #29 US Pop, #2 US Rock, #16 AUS
"When It's Over" (1982) #26 US Pop, #21 US Rock
"Jump" (1982) #101 US Pop
"Hot Girls in Love" (1983) #11 US Pop, #2 US Rock
"Queen of the Broken Hearts" (1983) #34 US Pop, #11 US Rock
"Lovin' Every Minute of It" (1985) #9 US Pop, #3 US Rock
"Dangerous" (1985) #65 US Pop, #23 US Rock
"This Could Be The Night" (1986) #10 US Pop, #9 US Rock
"Lead A Double Life" (1986) #68 US Pop
"Heaven In Your Eyes" (1986) #12 US Pop
"Notorious" (1987) #38 US Pop, #8 US Rock
"Too Hot" (1989) #84 US Pop, #27 US Rock

Cheap Trick: Cheap Trick created a substantial fan base through its own brand of power pop music with a hard-edged almost-metal yet melodic pop sound that combines the tunefulness of The Beatles with the speed and energy of punk rock

"I Want You To Want Me"
"Ain't That A Shame"
"Southern Girls (Single Version)"
"Surrender"
"Stop This Game"
"Dream Police"
"If You Want My Love"
"Tonight It's You"
"Everything Works If You Let It"
"Mandocello"
"I Can't Take It" (live)
"She's Tight"
"That '70s Song (In the Street)"
"Walk Away" (w/Chrissie Hynde)
"Can't Stop Falling Into Love"
"The Flame" (live)

Cheap Trick. Can't beat having the theme song for the That 70's Show. Big Grin

Great thread. Not two of my favorites, but two very good bands. I would have to call it a tie on this one. Too close to call.
#4
cheap trick hit their creative peak in the late 70s. they cheesed out in the 80s.
#5
Cheap Trick has to be the best out of the two, just cause I think their music is better and they are probably one of the loudest bands to have heard in concert.
#6
I hate both of them lol.
#7
Def. Cheap Trick

Cheap Trick. The Flame is the greatest slow song ever.
#10
Cheap Trick wins this one hands down IMO. "Live at Budokahn" is a classic. I never got Loverboy. They always seemed too over produced to me, too many keyboards.

Out of these 2 bands Loverboy is the poster child for 80s cheese.

Looks like Cheap Trick will be week one winner

The winner of first round game one is Cheap Trick by 85% of the vote. In week 5, they will be matched up with the winner of Aerosmith/Led Zeppelin
