Mercer's search for new football coach appears down to 5 candidates


1) Clay Clevenger. He’s the head coach at Henderson County and a former Lincoln County assistant coach under Larry French. He was an all-state lineman at Danville and played at Carson-Newman College. He started his coaching career at Cumberlands and moved up to defensive coordinator before coming to Lincoln.


2) Shadon Brown. He spent last year at Rowan County as head coach after working the previous season as an assistant coach at Boyle County. Like Clevenger, he played at Danville and then went on to play at Campbellsville University. He also coached at both Campbellsville and Cumberlands.


3) Bill Mason. He has been the defensive coordinator at Mercer under Jaggers. He was the head coach at Nelson County from 2002-2005 before coming to Mercer for its state championship season in 2006.


4) Dave Thomas. He’s currently the defensive coordinator at Scott County.


5) Will Weaver. He’s the head coach at Madisonville-North Hopkins, where his team finished 7-4 last year after going 5-5 the previous season. He was an assistant coach at Fort Campbell before that.

i hope weaver dont leave madisonville,they seem to really like him and is going good things,they need to get back on track here, they been threw serveral coaches the past couple of yrs before he came..

Clevenger is full fledged Triple-Option to the core.

Brown, I think does a little bit everything.

Mason, has dabbled in the Franklin System and everything 'old school'.

Weaver at Madville throws it around.

The guy at Scott Co? Not sure about.

Whoever gets it doesn't have a whole lot of prep time before the season begins. I think they open with Breathitt Co.? Tough assignment to start with.

Yeah we play Mercer in Campbellsville in a bowl game to open up the season. It should be a good game but I still think we will best them by 3 touchdowns or so.
