Highlands/Male Scrimmage
#1
Highlands looked very good tonight. Bardo has a great arm, Collingsworth looked very good with limited play (Had about a 60 yard TD run on his first carry),Roller looked "great" after an amazing recovery from a blown out knee, and O and D lines looked good. I think the kickoff team needs a little work, and runs around the ends hurt the D a little. Hope Bardo stays healthy, because backup did not impress(he did have 2nd and 3rd team players going against their 1st team though).
The score was 50-14 going into the 4th when Male's first team scored 4 times on HHS 2nd and 3rd teamers. That also includes 2 onsides kickoffs that Male recovered(It was not HHS first team kickoff team either).
Bardo is going to be all that the hype has said about him. He was throwing lasers and right on target all but two throws. His 40-45 yd pass was a beauty!!(that was 40-45 yds in the air). He was laying passes right over the defense all night. He also was very good at avoiding the sack.
This team looks like they will give up a few scores on defense, but the offense is going to put up some big numbers(43 pts in the first half tonight).

Final score was Highlands 50 Male 40

26 of those points were against Highlands' 2nd and 3rd teamers though. Highlands led 43-14 when they began mixing subs in with starters.

Either way, for Highlands 1st team to put up 43 on Male and only allow 14 to them, is a very good sign for Birds fans, scrimmage or not.

They may very well be the best team in the state. (Yes that includes T and X)

^ This was HHS starting KOReturn front lines. The bounce of the ball makes ALL the difference. But TWICE that's some english, well executed by Male's Special Teams.

Did they use many of the players on SPT that will be their when the season starts?

From what I understand, Highlands used a lot of players on both sides of the ball, as well as special teams.

BTW, the True kid is going to be an absolute stud for Highlands over the next few years. I believe he's a sophomore to be.

Here is the report I just got from someone who was there:

Birds rolled early with their starters/1st team and were up big.

The only concern was when the JV was in they struggled.

6'3 soph, Towles, looked really good though and looks to be a dual threat Qb. He should end up being next year's QB.

Male scored 4 td's in the second half against mainly sophs.

As far as Brandon Roller's return, he played like a mad man yesterday and is definetly one of the top Lb's in the state. He has gotten considerably bigger since last year and is very mobile.

At the freshman level in the split field portion on the scrimmage, Male was very big (avg 6' 200lbs) but Birds were too fast. They pretty much did what they wanted and I believe scored 5 times to Male's 1 in their 15 play series. Jack Collinsworth (yes, there's a younger one coming up) scored 2 td's. Colin Seidel (5'4 120lbs) was pound for pound the best player on the field. He was the fastest kid out there and was also lowering the boom and dragging tacklers trying to take him down. Jack, Ben Streeter, and Colin Seidel may be the best backfield that some have seen at that age in Fort Thomas in quite some time.

Their line also isn't too shabby with Linden Kidwell (5'9 205), Ritchie Whitford (5'8 190), Gabe Schultz (5'7 180), and Nick True (6'4 215). They have a very good left handed QB in Mccoy who is helped by a big receiver in 6'1 David Christian. Defensively they're led by Mccoy , Blake Schutte (LB 5'10 145), David Christian (LB 6'1 180), Reid Schroeder (LB 5'9 160), and then Linden Kidwell and Brandon Lawrey on the D line.

The Birds whole program is absolutely loaded with talent.

I have to agree with you on Roller, that was the best thing to see all night. I was glad to see the kid recover from a major injury! The freshmen team rolled over Males freshmen; HHS program looks to be in good shape for the future.

I've been saying since last year that Roller was one of the best lb's in the state for c/o 2010. The kid is a stud and is all over the place out there.

What position do you Collinsworth playing at the next level?

Highlands is very good, but that is not your big brothers Male.

He'll be recruited as an athlete and play wherever the coaches see him fitting in.

He'll likely be a receiver or DB though depending on where he ends up.

I think you are probably right about Male. Okay team but nothing close to the Bush era teams.

Do you think the success of Central, as well as the improvement at programs like Ballard, Eastern and Seneca, are diverting top athletes that previously would have went Male?

I think it is probably a combination of all the things you mentioned.
