When it comes to playing football, Holmes defensive lineman Andy Sullivan said Bulldogs teammate Tommy Courtney is an unhinged hitter and a clever opportunist.

"He’s everywhere," Sullivan said. "He makes plays."

Courtney just wants to go out in style during his final year and contribute to a state championship-contending team. To him, that means taking ownership of the entire football field when the other guys have the ball and taking the ball away from the other guys.
"I’m a senior. I only have a few games left. I’m gonna go hard," Courtney said.
On Friday, Bellevue found out just how disruptive the Bulldogs’ relentless linebacker can be.
Courtney forced turnovers on two consecutive Bellevue plays to end a pair of Tigers possessions early in the second quarter. Holmes scored following each turnover while putting together three touchdown drives in a span of 3:05 and went on to rout the Tigers, 54-7.
The game was scoreless until Tyrique Simpson scored on a 14-yard run to cap a 60-yard Bulldogs drive with one second left in the opening quarter. Bellevue tailback D.J. Slater fumbled on the third play following Simpson’s score.
"I saw No. 22 (Slater) taking off, so I followed him and my ’backer (Courtney) hit him," Sullivan said. "I saw the ball and fell on it."
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 7 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll, got the ball on the Bellevue 41. Two plays later, Greg Clemons (nine carries, 98 yards) scored on a 15-yard run.
On the next Bellevue play from scrimmage, Courtney intercepted Tigers quarterback Jacob Sparks, giving Holmes the football at its own 49. Quarterback Jesse Jensen hit Dasean Peterson with a 34-yard completion and found the sophomore receiver again for a 6-yard touchdown strike.
Just like that, Holmes (2-0) had a 21-0 lead against the Tigers (1-2).
"That was lovely watching our defense set up our offense like that," Bulldogs tailback Damian Oden said.
Said Holmes coach Stephen Lickert: "We were kind of sluggish at the start. But those two (Courtney and Sullivan) allowed us to get on the board."
Lineman Charles Knox also keyed a Bulldogs defense that held Bellevue’s Slater to 16 yards on 16 carries one week after Slater sliced through Newport for nearly 200 yards.
"Their D-line outphysicaled us," Slater said. "Our plan was run straight at them and take away their speed."
It didn’t work.
Holmes outgained Bellevue in total yardage, 435-114. The Tigers managed 56 yards rushing.
For the Bulldogs, Jensen finished 11-of-13 passing for 137 yards with two TD passes to Peterson (eight catches, 108 yards). Oden rushed 10 times for 128 yards and scored on a 69-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that no doubt will cause a viral sensation on the Internet at Holmes.
On second-and-nine from the Bulldogs 31, Oden bolted into the secondary on a run up the middle and nearly stopped in his tracks with a stutter step to his right while letting the pursuit overrun the play before pealing away from traffic and outrunning the Tigers to the end zone.
"I’d describe that as a nasty run," Jensen said.
