Harrison only able to score on Cards jv as Cards walk over them easily by air and foot. Harrison High School's football team made a long trip to Mayfield, Ky., on Saturday and then faced a much longer trip home.
That's because the traditional Kentucky football power, the defending Class A state champion, played like it and won 59-14.
"We just weren't ready to play early in the game and they were," said Harrison coach Brian Lewis. "They returned a couple of early interceptions for touchdowns and we never recovered."
By halftime the Cardinals (2-0) were up 42-0 and well on the way to their 17th straight win over the last two seasons.
"Mayfield is a great football team," said Lewis. "They're big and athletic and they played very well. We just didn't do a good enough job of matching the intensity they brought early in the game."
By the end of the game, the Warriors (1-1) were down to their third-string quarterback, Aaron Killebrew, who is normally Harrison's top receiver.
Lewis said Killebrew did produce, though, racking up over 100 yards rushing and both of the Warriors' touchdowns.
"Now we have to regroup and get ready for a good North team next week," said Lewis. "We're still 1-1 this season."
