) âWe have to take it one game at a time.â
Great advice! I wouldnât recommend playing two games at once. Iâm no football wizard, but 22 guys on defense may slow your offense down a bit, coach.
The other team just wanted it more.â
Itâs a shame that we practice football skills. We should practice âwantingâ skills if thatâs what determines the outcome of a game. I think the height of my âwantingâ career was back when I was about 11 and wanted an ice cream sandwich three days before the Schwanâs guy was supposed to come by. That was a long three daysâbut I assure you, I wanted it more than most.
In fact, now is a great time to pay homage to the best âwanterâ of all timeâLittle Ralphie Parker back in the 1940s. That dude wanted a Red Rider BB Gun really bad. If there was a Hall of Fame for wanting, Ralphie would be the very first inductee despite shooting his eye out.
They left it all on the field.â
That would totally suck for the field crew after the game.
Uhhh, can someone please come down to the field and pick up 110 jock straps, please?
They are better than their record indicates.â
This is used by announcers who are trying to say, âPlease donât change the channel,â and by coaches who are trying to say, âDo NOT come out flat against these pansies.
âHe really gives 110 percent.â
No, he REALLY doesnât. Why not 105 percent or 115 percent? Itâs physically impossible to give over 100 percent. So why not 150 percent? Why is 10 percent over 100 the arbitrary number we pick when someone gives it their all? Basically 110 percent has become the new 100 percent. So in all probability this cliché isnât going anywhere. From now on Iâm just going to say, âHe gave 115 percentâ...due to inflation.

I still talk to kids I coached 20 years ago. I've seen them get married, have kids, I've even coach a few of their kids. I went back to coaching to help a former player start a program, why? because he ask me. I'll run into former players all over Northern Kentucky and we'll chat not missing a beat even though years have past.
But then again a coach doesn't matter in a kids life, they have no influence at all:lame:

I respect your opinion and understand your philosophy. I agree it should be the parents. The reality is it's a different time. We get a lot of kids with very little guidance. Seen a lot of kids that don't know what they're going to eat or where they're going to sleep etc.Kids around the pain pill epidemic all the time.
The philosophy of no relationships is a great way to fail IMO. Just look at last basketball coach. In fact the one major philosophy I will go to my grave with us that when a kid knows you genuinely love them they will accept being pushed beyond what they could ever push themselves to be great!
You don't like the coaches that's fine. You question his work ethic that's fine. As somebody who has coached with multiple coach of the year staffs I'll defend him from 1st hand knowledge. I've been with him when nobody's around and seen him work. I've bounced ideas, watched film and game planned with him. His football IQ when we did D is as good as anybody else I've been around on D.
Realistically do you think We were better than Belfry this year?
Do you think we're better than Belfry this year?
If not do you think they've had a successful year if they finish 2nd in District behind Belfry?

Never said that a coach has no influence in a kids life but I would rather like to think that the parents made the kid who they are and influenced the decisions that they make in life or at least I know mine did. I had some real good teachers in school who I liked and I see em from time to time but I don't give em any credit for how I turned out. They only thing I give em credit for is for teaching me. I don't remember any teachers in school giving me any life lessons except how to read and do math.

I had great parents and I wish all kids could grow up like I did and not have to go through the things that they do. I would never in a million years ever come on here and judge what kind of a person you or the head coach or any other person is. I think it is great that you do everything in your power to help the kids who have problems like this. I think some people just take this game of football and coaching and things said on BGR just a little to serious because at the end of the day it's not very serious at all compared to things like what some of the kids in this area are going through due to drugs and other things.

Heck I think finishing 3rd to Belfry and Pike Central would be a very successful year with how young and small we are but do you think either of those things are going to happen. I think at the end of the year it will be like this.

#1Belfry
#2Pike Central
#3Sheldon Clark
#4Lawrence County
#5East Ridge
I think last year we had enough talent, size, speed and experience to finish 2nd to Belfry but I just don't see it this year. Belfry is going to be just as good as last year. Pike is going to be strong also, maybe just a little off from last but not much. There was a lot of talk about Pike loosing the head coach but from what I hear he is still there. Sheldon Clark had a very weird year last year but I think they will much improved this year and we go to their house this time. East Ridge has had a lot of problems with us and just about every other team so who knows with those guys. If we did finish 2nd to Belfry I would jump for joy but I think that will be a large task. Some polls have us ranked over Pike Central but I just don't see it Just my own personal opinion.

I definaly think it's doable. Belfry is in a class of their own right now until somebody in the District proves other wise. I think they are the best team preseason in 3A.
I think people really underestimate how talented the two backs from Sheldon Clark were last year. Everybody at the All Star game that didn't see Skyles play was blown away. That kid benched almost 400lbs and was as fast as Turner O Brian. We haven't had two backs that fast in forever. Like you said it' always tough at Sheldon Clark but I can't see two backs better than those two. Pike Central is at home this year. They lost some good talent and had some transfer to Breathitt Co. Don't know anytihing about East Ridge.
To me it's Belfry then the next 3. This is the smallest LC team I can remember but they've got some kids that can play and they will play hard. I think scheme wise what they are doing this year will fit well around the talent they have. AJ is going to be a nice size QB and has never shyed away from being physical. Morgan is an OBrian they can all fly. Goble is a tough nosed fullback that is easy to lose in the crowd. Kids like Lambert+Schaffer have several good years ahead of them catching the football. The line has some kids with experience in Adams, Bradshaw, Rice+Quillen. Prince is a kid that has always played big and has a ton of varsity sports experience.
On defense it's been a long time since we've had two inside backers with the experience that Watson+Wellman bring. They will be physical on the inside. Haven't been around so don't know who is on Dline or DB's. G Kiser is another kid that will find a spot on the field and has many good years ahead of him. Prince is experienced on the backend of the defense too.
That first group has kids that can play just not a ton of size. Size isn't everything though. To me the big thing with this team will be staying healthy, getting better each week and being mentally strong. Last years group played all through middle school+high school with Coach Salmmons. It was a shock to them when he left. Almost everything changed fast. This years kids have been around. They will have the choice to rally together and get home playoffs or feel bad for themselves which will spell doom. Playing up against schools as big as Ashland, Perry+Letcher is not good right now for the program. The numbers have dropped so low I won't be surprised if we aren't 2A soon. That's tough depth wise. Unfortunatly for Coach Cecil he's been stuck with this schedule of rough games almost every week. Hopefully next year they get a couple of chances to get healthy etc.
End of the day we all have the same passion. We want the program on top. I know this group of kids have the drive in them to take another step in that direction. One game doesn't make or break the season. Just need to focus on hitting their stride for the District games and get home field playoffs as long as they can IMO.

I'm looking for big things from A.J., Ricky, and Morgan.

I actually expected alot worst from the scrimmage. Of course they are very young and inexperienced but i think this could be a big building year for them. Big thing missing from practice is enthusiasm. Look to see big plays from Prince an Lambert as well grad02

Yea and you sound like you're envious because you're not the head coach. If you're so awesome why don't you apply for the head coaching position. I bet they'd win state for sure. Good luck to Coach Cecil and the Bulldogs.
This is for you. :1:

This is a very athletic team, they're just young right now. Like Hunter/James said this should be a rebuilding year, O' Brian is very elusive. Cyrus has also stepped up for the Bulldogs in one of the leaders this year. Im excited about this year, can't wait to watch my dogs in action.
08-14-2012, 03:24 PM
Prince is one of those guys who always works hard and gives you everything he has every play, any coach would love to have him. He makes up for his size with heart!! Lambert is very talented, as well as Keesee, Kiser, Schaffer. Watson and Wellman are the heart and soul of the team, excited to see how they do.
08-14-2012, 08:15 PM
Yes, Watson and Wellman are the heart and should of our team. They're great leaders and great players, They should do a lot this season for our strong Defense. Blake Prince is a talented safety, he has so much heart. If the ball is anywhere near him in the air its a pick.

Ok so I don't know if anyone will see this with the fact that it has been pushed back to the page 9 but it's like this. This is a website about sports. This is a game and nothing more. Most of the people who post on here are kids and that is why I keep my language in check and things like that. I guess I got confused with someone else because my sister who has nothing to do with BGR or sports just gave me a call and said that she ran into a person who she went to school with and said her husband is a coach at Lawrence County. My sister said that the finger was pointed at me for saying bad things about people and revealing who they are. I have never said anything bad about a person on here or questioned what kind of person they are and never would and if anyone can find a place where I did then show me. I have never said anything about another coach and never said anything about a player other than to give em praise. I also have never revealed a person on here other then my own name a few pages back in this thread that I don't even remember doing but I don't care if people know who I am. It is well known that I don't like the choice of the new coach and I have said this and it is just my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I have never questioned what kind of man the new coach is or if he is good with the kids. When I make my comments it is all about football and has nothing to do with personal things and I don't think personal stuff has any place on BGR. I think a lot of people need to grow up and look at where they are. This is a sports site to talk about sports and nothing more. Im not trying to get anyone fired and I seriously doubt that the powers that be in Lawrence County schools look at what people like me say on BGR to decide to hire or fire a coach. You name me one job that you don't get judged and evaluated on by your boss or your fellow workers or your customers. This is a part of life and coaches know this when they take a coaching job. Like I said I have never said anything about what kind of a person or a man anyone on here is but if someone is going to act this childish and can't take a little criticism then yes I do question what kind of person you are. The funny part of all of this is the fact that the head coach is the only person who I have said anything about and he is not even on BGR because he has other things to take care of but if he was I doubt he would care what I think or I hope not anyway.

Now tell me have you ever had a career where you are never evaluated or criticized because if you have then tell me about it because I want that job. The jobs iv'e had most of my life as a correctional officer and security officer I have been called every name in the book and even in other languages, spit on kicked and had just about every body fluid you can think of thrown on me. I have had captains and lieutenants watch my every move and evaluate everything I have ever did once every quarter and all of this stuff made me better at what I do so I wish all I ever got was someone telling me if they think Im good or not. Grow up and realize that coaches should get evaluated and criticized just as much as any other job or do you think coaches are special and should just get to do what they want and never be questioned. Just keeping it simple so you can understand but I doubt you ever will

There are a lot of reasons for high turn over rates in jobs. You should look at the turn over rate in corrections.
Sorry if I made you :Sad04:
Most jobs that have a high turn over rate have this rate because it is a hard job and not just anyone can take it. Some times people are just no good at the job. Sometimes they don't produce any results and things don't change so they are let go so someone else can give it a try. There are a lot of reasons and I doubt it has as much to do with being criticized as what you think. If a coach can't take a little criticism then I know of a lot of jobs that he will never make it at. Name me a job where the employee takes a job and don't do well and has no results to show and the boss just lets that person go on and and thinks ok he is a good person and this is a hard job so we will keep him. I have no power or say so as to a coaches job. I think the people over the school system take care of that. You will never hear me calling out an assistant coach or a player on here because those coaches are for the most part volunteers and the players are just kids and can only be as good as the head coach can mold theme to be. On the other hand the job as a head coach is a paying job. Now I work in Lawrence County and I pay my taxes, federal, state and local and including school taxes and I know that the money the school system uses to pay coaches comes from the tax payers or did you think this money came from the coach salary tree. So you are going to try to tell me I have no right to put out my opinion of how I think the coach is doing. I did and I will continue to do so and if it bothers people like you then all the better.
