Can anyone challenge the 1A West?
#1
At the beginning of the season, my dad and I were talking about what could become of the championship game in single A.

Mayfield and Russellville stand each at 7-0. Both defeated a pretty tood Fort Campbell team. Mayfield beat them by 2 tds and Rville beat them by 1 td. So by comparing those scores, won could argue that MF is a td or two better than Rville. Which imo gives Rville a legit shot at beating them. So here is what we discussed.

Whoever comes out of the east will be battle tested. Imo u r looking at :
Pikeville: Front runner, balanced offense that can score
Fairview: Close 2nd but not balanced enough to be #1
Hazard: Vastly improved and always a solid defensive team in november.
Raceland: At their best they r the best team in the east. Problem is, they have yet to play at that level for 4 quarters. We will know exactly who Fairview and Raceland are in a couple days.
Williamsburg: High powered passing attack has put up big numbers in their losses, but they havent resulted in points. Still alt to be seen this year, next year they r legit contenders.

So whoever comes out of this group....confratulations! U get to play Mayfield. If not Mayfield the its someone who was able to contain Guhy(no other qb compares in 1A w his experience and abilty) and an offense that managed to outscheme one of the best defenses in any class 1A-3A, maybe the best.

My auestion is this. IF Mayfield gets knocked off by Rvikke or Bwood, does any team from the east have a legit chance to win a state championship?

If we score against hazard (an thats an if)And we will this year, williamsburg will play MAYFIELD Confusednicker:

The east need mayfield or they wouldn't be anyone else

IMO the championship belongs to Mayfield , with Russellville having a decent chance . Everyone in the East is just playing this yr for the honor of playing on the carpet . Just being honest , & realistic . However i feel Fairview will have a good chance of winning it next yr , but not saying we will, just a chance . Of course thats if we can get there that is , & i feel have a good shot at getting there next yr

Who knows? Look at 2011. They already had the Khsaa Mayfield championship shirts made out before the game was even played. My parents had to wait a week to get a shirt with Hazard on it after the game. I also remember posters on here and on the radio talking the same junk they are this year, "It's a pity Mayfield has to play Hazard, this is just a bad alignment by Khsaa." "If you missed the Mayfield/Beechwood game then you have already missed the state championship and this game will be nothing more than an opportunity to show off how good mayfield is." What I am getting at is nobody knows, if you are convinced you know, you have either just started watching highschool football or you have never watched high school football. We will know if anybody can beat Mayfield by December, and I'll put money on that Wink

Any team can loose on any given Friday or Saturday. As stated above no one give hazard a shot because of the blow out the year before but it come to show you that its a new year and nothing is certain.
#8
I am just going by defenses really. The top dogs in the west havent give up near as many points as those in the east.
#9
Mayfield and then everyone else. Who in the west can beat Mayfield? They are a notch above. Russellville and Beechwood are good teams just like the 5 teams from the East. Mayfield could be beat but if I had to bet $100 it would bet Mayfield against the field.

Gotta agree with Scotty Bronson's list. Imo, it will be either Pikeville, or Fairview out of the East. As stated, Pikeville is well balanced offensively.., and can put up huge numbers fast. The defense is a concern. Fairview is a very physical team with mental toughness, and a pretty good defense. Having said that, imo, Pikeville will come out of the East , and have a shot at Beechwood, or Russellville. Mayfield is another story.

Congrats to Hazard in 11. You won fair and square, no crying here but Jackson being injuried helped Hazard tremendously. But you won...

We can't make excuses for 2011. We lost and Hazard won. It is not fair to make such excuses. Hazard was the better team on that day.

Now for this year. I would say it will be Mayfield, Beechwood or Russellville from the west. It will be the team with the least injuries in my opinion. It will be Raceland/Fairview winner or Hazard from east. Pikeville has outside shot. I don't know from there.

Funny, no one even mentions Frankfort from the west. IMO, they're every bit as good as anyone in the east and right there with the best from the west. Every team being mentioned have there strengths and weaknesses, Mayfield included, and a lot of things can happen. Injuries to a key player or 2. Turnovers, penalties, special team mishaps. All kinds of things can happen with that oblong ball that doesn't always bounce your way. If I were a betting man, which I'm not, I'd put my money on Mayfield, simply because I think they have the most important elements it takes to be a championship caliber team, great line play, solid kicking game, doesn't beat themselves and experience in key skill positions like QB & WR and probably a little more depth than most other 1a teams.

I agree Frankfort does need to be considered a threat. But I do wanna say and must say that Frankfort is in the same category with Raceland and Williamsburg who have yet to win the big game.

Mayfield from the west. Pikeville, Fairview, or Hazard from the east. I'm guessing but I'll take Mayfield vs Pikeville! Panther d needs to step up though! Wburg c'mon guys! They will not get out of region.
#17
I think Mayfield has a shot as long as 64 doesn't pick us to win.

I wonder how much money 64 has spent on Williamsburg State Champ shirts? He claims a tirle the first thread of the season every year. Raceland has alot to prove. Starting with this week. Watch video on Raceland in the 2nd quarter of the Ashland, Boyd, and Coal Grove game and they are a scary team. Watch them in the first quarter of the Lawrence couńy game and they are an ugly team. When this team is clicking, they are hard to stop offensivel and defensively. When they get disrupted all hell can break loose. Raceland hasnt won the big one this year, but thu have showed fight. Which is something the last couple Ram teams havent done when theyve gotten down. The moment Pikeville got with in a touchdown of Raceland last year the game was over. This team has been in 3 games that were falling apart. Ashland, LC, and CG. They lost to Ashland by one. A better officiated game and the score is something like Raceland 48/Ashland 35. Ashland had a td called back on a horrid clipping call and Raceland had 2 tds negated by a bad holding call and a clipping call. They managed to win the game against a the winkess Coal Grove team. How that team has only won one or two games this hear is beyond me. Hooefulky the losses have taught the Rams a thing or two about consistency.

Cannot let officiating be the deciding factor. Use the Marines moto. That is adapt, overcome and conquer.

Agree 100% with ya 55. That is why after the Coal Grove game, I felt like the Rams had finally made that stride into being the team we all thought they were. They dominated the 2nd quarter in a way that made them look like the team to beat in the east. Then had two tds called back and 2 drives by coal grove sustained by two bad personel foul penalties. But still, they managed a way to rise and over come. Then without Beech and Litteral, they fell apart against Lawrence Co. Championship caliber teams find ways to get past adversity. This Ram team has made strides in that direction, the Lawrence Co game was a combination of being without two sr rbs, defensive break down, and being beat up after CG. They have had the off week snd then Nicholas County to rest up and shore things up on the defensive side of the ball. Just two more days and we will know if the LC loss was a wake up call for the rams or a wake up dall to man who said Raceland was a contender.

Mayfield will be your 2013 class 1A state champions, bank on it!

mysonis55 you keep leaving out Williamsburg :truestory:

Williamsburg does not get by Hazard. Hazard will be Hazardous to the Jackets chances.
#25
Bowling Green can, given that they practically play a 1A schedule other than St. X and Lex Cath.

BG is best team in state.
