Newport, which hasn’t beaten Newport Catholic in football since 1999, came into their home stadium helbent on an upset – and looked as though it might be headed in that direction until a blocked punt turned the tide early in the third quarter.
From there, Newport Catholic powered its way to a 35-16 victory behind big back Chris Kelly (16-for-123 yards and 4 touchdowns).
Quarterback Demetri Brown (16-for-29 passing, 234 yards) was named MVP for Newport.
“They were a little bigger than us – and a little bit faster than I thought they’d be,” said Newport’s two-way star Brandon Carter (running back, defensive back). “Despite that, we feel like we could’ve won the game if we didn’t keep hurting ourselves.”
Several times, Newport appeared to have the NewCath QB Jake Cain stymied in the backfield or Kelly stopped coming around the corner, only to let them get away.
And besides the blocked punt, Newport had three passes intercepted.
Despite those three INTs, Brown showed a lot of leadership.
“Mr. Brown’s a great athlete,” Rice said. “When we lost our quarterback from last year, we took our best athlete and put him at quarterback. He’s a smart kid and will make plays; he’s only going to get better every week.”
On offense, Newport moved the ball, but didn’t finish off enough drives.
“We didn’t capitalize on all the opportunities we had,” Carter said. “I really don’t think anybody can hang with our offense, but sometimes our defense doesn’t finish off the job, and I’m a part of that, too.”
Newport’s Carter is only 5-foot-5 and 135 pounds, but what a force.
“Brandon Carter plays with his soul on fire,” said Newport coach Nick Rice. “If you’ve got 11 kids that play like Brandon Carter, you’d be a successful team. It’s coming, though. We have a lot of kids who play like that.”
When the punt was blocked, Newport was trailing only 14-8, which was the halftime score. Newport got down 14-0 in the first quarter, but closed hard on a Dmitri Brown keeper for the TD a sharp throw to wideout Sean Gross, 4 catches for 54 yards and two two-point pass conversions).
“We made some mistakes we go over in practice every day,” Carter said. “We’re going to beat these guys sometimes, but right now we’re just kind of beating ourselves. Hopefully, we’ll see these guys again.”
Coach Rice expects to see NewCath or Holy Cross again.
Newport dropped to 24 (0-1 in conference. NewCath moved to 2-5 (1-0).
“We made some mistakes late in the game that cost us, but we’re a young team and we’ll fix those mistakes,” said Coach Rice. “The ball bounced in their (NewCath’s) direction a couple of times where we needed it to bounce our side. But that happens; all you can do is play the next play and move on.”
The Newport offense was clicking, and had NewCath back on its heels. It will be interesting to see what the film shows on the blocked punt. Everybody always wants to blame the line for the breakdown, but sometimes the punter is slow getting the ball off. The punter has to be aware of the rush and speed up
his steps if that’s what it takes.
NewCath took it in to make it 21-8, and although Newport never quit, one could see the wind go back into NewCath’s sails. Kelly scored his third TD on a one-yard dive to make it 28-8, but Newport roared back on a 3-yard Brandon Carter run to keep it a ballgame at 28-16.
Kelly’s fourth TD on an 11-yard run (35-16) ended all hope, however.
“We’ll get this thing turned around,” Rice said. “Newport kids are really resilient.
They’ll regroup and come back next week ready to go.”
